To convert a carburated GS/Skylark to port EFI

    Loyd Turbocharger junkie

Would like to attempt this project this summer. This is some of the information I have gathered. Much of this information has been collected at "High Tech for Old Iron" on the V8 board. Anybody in for filling in the gaps to make this project easier for DIYers.

There is a lot of great information at http://www.megamanual.com/v22manual/minj.htm#fb

    Kits by vendors:

Mass-Flo EFI, Inc West Brookfield, MA Tel: 508-867-6733 / http://www.mass-floefi.com/mass-flo.html

Rance Fuel Injection Service Genesee, PA Tel: 814-228-3800 / http://www.rancefi.com/ (thanks Stg1Regal)

TA Performance Phoenix, AZ Tel: 480-922-6807 / http://www.taperformance.com/

    Necessary components to consider:

    Intake:

    Single plane intake preferred
SPX intake from TA performance has port injection fuel injector bungs already in place

    Folks that can modify intakes:
(standard intake to port fuel injection conversion, weld in bungs plus drill for injectors, fabricate the fuel rails, weld on the fuel rail brackets and machine work associated)

Young's Performance Decatur, AL - TEL: 256-351-9949 / http://www.youngsperformance.com/ $375 in 2003 dollars. According to Kerry, you supply the SPX manifold and fuel injectors used for setting the rail height.

Force Fuel Injection Miami, FL - TEL: 305-235-6160 / http://force-efi.com/

Wilson Manifolds INC. Ft. Lauderdale, FL - TEL: 954-771-6216 / http://www.wilsonmanifolds.com/ will take your intake and convert for $650

    XSPerformance (Michael Tweedy - XSPerformance@iwon.com) - Covington, Ga - http://xsperformance.net/

Fuel bungs to weld into intake manifold:

    HRpartsNstuff - Atwater,OH - Phone: (330) 947-2433 - http://www.hrpartsandstuff.com/products/bungs/bungchoice.htm

Information on injector bungs for port injectors by checking out http://www.sdsefi.com for injector/manifold installation information, along with lots of other great information. The bungs are 0.530"-0.535" inside diameter [about 17/32" or 13.5 mm]. The fuel supply lines for the top of the injectors are the same size.

MSD and others have an Epoxy-In Pocket fuel injector bung as PN 2120 (set of 8). Holley also offers them as PN 534-83 for a four pack (~$50), 534-84 for a pack of six (~$72), or 534-85 for a pack of eight (~$94).

    Fuel Rails

These serve two functions: they supply fuel to a multiple number of injectors, and they physically secure and locate the tops of the injectors. Many place supply blank aluminum fuel rail extrusions in whatever length you need. One example is Ross Machine (http://www.rossmachineracing.com/products.html). They have two styles of fuel rail extrusion. They can also create custom fuel rails for you, with the injector holes placed to suit you.

The aluminum extrusion comes in two sizes:

    * Dash 10 (.800" Bore) - $10/foot, and
    * Dash 6 (.500" Bore) - $12/foot.

    Throttle Body:
EFI Spyder "Power Elbow" Coast High Performance (CHP) - Torrance CA - Phone: 310-784-1010 / www.coasthigh.com for right at $140 (polished extra) It will accept any size throttle body up to 90mm with no modification.

Accufab 90mm throttle body or Ford EFI throttle body

    or

Accufab 1000 cfm four barrel throttle body http://www.accufabracing.com/catalog.htm

    Accufab, Inc. - Ontario, CA - Tel: 909-930-1751 / http://www.accufabracing.com/throttle_bodies.htm#4B

    Fuel Injectors:

    To calculate injector size:
    http://www.iroczone.com/calcs/injectorsize.htm

Eight 30 lbs/hr injectors would be adequate at 80% duty cycle to support over 375 HP
Eight 43.5 lbs/hr injectors (AKA 009 injectors) would be adequate at 80% duty cycle to support over 558 HP

    Fuel Tank for GS
70 California Car (thanks RACEBUICKS - Michael Garrison) or 71 and 72 (thanks JW) has baffled tank
As an alternate a 91-96 caprice tank will bolt up with fill modifications

    Fuel Pump

Walbrow 340 (or new version equivalent) in-tank pump mounted on sender unit - avoid external pumps . . .

The fuel pump opening on the Turbo Regal tank is about 3", vs. 2-1/2" on the 70 thru 72 Skylark tanks. The Turbo Regal style pump (HP Walbro replacement) can fit through the stock GS tank's smaller flange, if you trust the fuel hose to hold the pump in place. Use a new 3/8 line and use the 5/16 for the return. The pump works all the way till the gauge gets to "E" just like with the stock arrangement.

Cut the sending unit's pickup tube off so that the inlet of the pump's filter sock will sit about where the pickup tube terminates. Put a bulge in the tube using a flare tool to help keep the hose on with double stainless steel hose clams. Drill out the 1/4 return line in the sending unit and replace it with a 3/8 tube soldered in. Take the 3/8 inch tube to near the bottom of the tank and use plastic straps to strap the pump to the return line as well. Use the bulkhead electrical connector from the sender from a tbi equipped car and retrofit it to the Skylark tank fuel level sending unit to supply power to the fuel pump.

    Fuel Lines

3/8 inch fuel line from tank to fuel rail

3/8 return line back to tank

Need to collect data on sizes and lengths plus fittings for flexible and steel tubing to assemble the system.

    Fuel Regulator:

    Accufab, Inc. - Ontario, CA - Tel: 909-930-1751 / http://www.accufabracing.com/fuel_regulators.htm#UniEFI

    Engine Management Unit

    FAST XFI unit - www.fuelairspark.com/Products/Information/xfi.asp
    Megasquirt
    Big Stuff 3
    Halltech

    Engine Management Sensors

    Distributor modifications
Crank Sensor for sequential FI rather than batch firing
Oxygen Sensor - narrow band versus wide band, plus do you use dual with headers ?
    Engine temperature sensor
    Intake charge temperature
    Manifold pressure sensor
    Throttle position sensor
    Idle air control
    Knock sensor and ESC module

    Engine control devices
    Idle air control
    Fuel pump relay

    Spark control boxes

With the engine management unit are spark control boxes a necessity or helpful in any way?

    Alternator sizing

What current rating alternator will it take to support all the loads added?

    Alternator to battery wire size

The Skylark/GS wiring harness has a 12 gage wire and a fusible link between the alternator and terminal on starter before the heavy cable to the battery. What improvements are necessary?

    Laptop Computer and software

What is the minimum laptop and software necessary for set up and tweaking

tlivingd BIG BLOCK, THE ANTI PRIUS

the caprice tank will only fit if you clearance the floor for the sending unit.

It looks like you have spent a lot of time doing the research. Have you figured out yet what the final price of an EFI system for the BBB engine is going to cost?
I appreciate the list, as it had a couple of sources I didn't know about.
    Later, Randy
