I saw that article, and it's dumb! as $ to horsepower, the cheapest cars by default make the list. If I'm interested in HP, why would I pick up a car that only has 108 hp ,even if the $ per hp is in the top ten?

They fail to recognize that dollars versus Hp graph is a nonlinear function. The higher the hp the more the next incremental hp costs.

A more meaningful comparison would be cost to get 600 hp or 500 hp with pump gas and street manners( no race cams please).

A guy I see at some local shows shopped the country for the best deal on a 502 Chev crate. I think he got his best deal from the west coast. I saw his dyno sheet. It was 500s on the hp and somewhere in the 500s on the torque. All for about 12K.

I think JW and others can build a Buick that will beat that for the same money. Of course it would not be F.I. nor would the case or crank be new. But that would not matter to me.

    Buick G-body: $1
    71 455: $125
    Parts & Upgrades: $3200

    ~400HP.

Where do I claim my prize?

This is sorta interesting to me. I thought it should be $/HP/weight. Never sorted anything that way, and was never interested in including all cars anyway.

How about this one: 13.5 hp lawn riding lawnmower 1300 Canadian.

That would be a good deal then!

    Got 'em beat!

Dad just bought a 20-hp riding mower from his neighbor for $50, that'd be $2.50/hp.

It's used, but then so was the $50 bill...

    Jim,
Interesting you can generally buy the Delux assembled 502 Chevy crate for about $7,200. Chevy rates it at 502HP & 567TQ. In part for talking with the Chevy heads who generally suggest why not just put a Crate 502 in it. I set out to build a complete fresh 509ci Cad motor for half the money.

My target is 509HP & 575TQ and my cost with premium parts machineing etc for a complete match to the 502 502 was $3,512. In fairness I assembled my own with the help of a friend and competant motor builder and I have no warranty with mine. Don't know if I will make my power goals yet but we will see. At least it will be different.

He got a dealer discount and he says not if you include a dyno run and FI. I was under the same impression as you about the 502 cost before I saw his set up. This guy and his son say they shopped everywhere too.

Oh I believe you. I did not mean to dispute your figures. The fuel injection ups the antie quite a bit. Add in the dyno pull and whatever else money goes fast. I was just comparing the carb motors and thinking its going to be fun making the Chevy heads (people who never consider that their could be another option) realize that their are other viable motors that they could consider. Big block Buick Olds Pontiac & Cadilac motors are to over looked for strong reliable streetable muscle car motors.
