I didn't have a good core, so I ordered this Q Jet on line. After trying a few rebuilts from Auto Zone, I decided to try Tomco. I am quite impressed. The throttle shafts are super tight, and everything is accurate for my application. Carb # is weird, though. Anyone know what a # 29241ME 0629 is?
Out of curiosity, what was wrong with the ones from AutoZone? Reason I ask is, I just picked up a rebuilt from Parts America, which is part of Auto Zone... haven't had a chance to install it, not sure if the car would start if I did install it anyway. Looking forward to hearing what happens with this one from Tomco :TU:
Every time they arrived (via FedEx) they were damaged. Also, throttle shafts weren't all that tight. I got this one off www.rockauto.com. It was packaged well - no damage It cost a little more, around $200.00, but I think it's worth it. Old Q Jets are getting very hard to find!
not a bad price at all....just so the carb is rebuilt correctly... let us know how she runs...I'm curious on that carb # also...hope someone chimes in...
That shipping carton looks very much like an Autoline carton. They are a remanufacturing facility here, (and perhaps elsewhere) and they put their own tag on each carb. I'd like a pic of that tag number, and carton, if possible please.
Thanks, looks to be a different company altogether. :TU: Still think that tag is specific to Tomco nevertheless.
Ah... this one looks good but I haven't taken it out of the wrapper. I've got two rebuildable Qjets (one original to my car, one off of a 72 GS350) but was too lazy to get either one of the two carb guys to do it. That and I got ambitious one day and was going to do it until it started to freezing rain. I still paid 180 because I didn't want to turn in either of my cores. Either way, I hope yours works out well!
the # might be a re-stamp.the carb looks like the (2)'68 carbs i have i have, which would eaplain for the 0629 # =62nd day of 1969.no luck either with factory rebuilds.had jim mcgowan do one for me and since i have learned how and have done 2 and have had good luck
Hi guys reguarding TOMCO....Out here on Long Island, I've been forced to install quite a few of these over the years. I have NEVER had good luck with the first one installed...usually took at least 2 to get a good one. Now most of these where import cars that I was replacing them on though. The unit you got should be fine, just wanted to add alittle back round to the company for you, I think they might actually be located on Long Island as well. Nick A.
It was quite common in the 1969 model year for Rochester to stamp only the last 5 digits of the part number. The actual number then is (70)29241. Look up this number and you will easily identify the carb. 15 years ago, Tomco was the cream of the commercial rebuilders (my opinion). They went through a fairly extensive executive shake-up, and I lost my wholesale buying status at that time. I have not used their rebuilts since, so do not know the quality of their current offerings. Jon.
It seems to be a good rebuild. No leaks, throttle shafts are tight, and the secondaries work well. I believe that I may have a part throttle problm, but I am not sure yet. It's weird because it seems to be a little weak under light throttle conditions. I'm going to experiment with different settings and see how it goes.
The unasked question here is that the unit on top is a vent, controlled by temperature. It was used to vent excessive vapor in the bowl. Called a bowl vent, it was eliminated during the early '70's due to emissions requirements. The weak off-idle could be the result of the idle mixture being lean, the vacuum advance not operating correctly, or a similar issue. These units had a solenoid, operated by the transmission, which eliminated the vacuum advance in any gear but high on the automatic. Check the ignition system, including the advances before blaming the carb. Ray
TOMCO equals JUNK!!! i installed 3 on a 430 once, all were crappy also tried several rebuilt 2 bbls on a chrysler 360 all were junk
