OK, here we go....today was the first start up of the year. Took out MSD distributer and primed engine to 50 psi on my gauge. Zeroed out everything, top dead center, etc...etc....
Fired the engine and after about 40-50 seconds of running the oil filter either imploded or exploded and I got a good healthy 4-5 quarts down the frame rail, all over the inner fender (remote oil filter assembly bolted to the inner fender) a real pain in the ass with oil everywhere like on the lower radiator hose the tranny lines, battery cables....etc....and not to mention all over the driveway. This same thing happened the very first time I fired the engine last year!!!!! Of course a year goes by, and I've done like 10 oil changes and the last thing from my mind was the little problem with priming/initial start up.

    Motorcraft FL1A filter....I know...I know....
7 quarts of Castrol GTX 20-50
    Outside temp 40 deg
    Scavenger oiling system by AM&P
BB Chevy pickup in TA deep pan

When the engine was Dynoed the builders were pleasantly surprised at how much oil pressure this engine makes.
Is buying a System One oil filter the cure for all my problems????
Lastly, after this happened the first time, I just got a new filter and fired the engine and held my breath and no problem....I've got 50 or so passes and 2000 miles on this set up and great pressure, cleaner that clean oil.
Am I priming the engine too much??? Any feed back from the more experienced BBB people is greatly apperciated....and I thought I'd share this with the guys...Thanks, Johnno

    Johnno,
Do you still have a relief valve? It may be stuck. Can you adjust the oil pressure? 20/50 oil is thick, can't you get by with thinner oil in the winter?

I do have the TA adj. oil pressure on there.
I also just got 5 quarts of the 20-50 and 2 quarts of 10-30 to thin it out a bit.
Will fire it up in the am and hopefully I'm OK.

    Johnno,
Too cold for 20/50 oil right now, try some 10/30 till it gets well above 70 degrees outside. I blew up an oil filter like that inside my enclosed trailer, what a mees that was! :Dou:

Johnno I agree that weight oil is way to heavy. Why not convert to Royal Purple. Costly but one of the best synthetics out there. Mine is the multi blend at 5 - 30 wieght

    to much pressure

Johnno i run an ac filter on my motor the motorcraft is also a good filter i think if you back off the T/A ADJ. regulator just a little bit youll be fine with the heavy oil one year in bristol i changed my regulator cuz it was real hot and i thought it would bring my pressure up a little at idle but as soon as i fired it up it blew the o- ring right off the filter by the time i saw the smoke from the oil on the headers it pumped out about 3 qts (big mess) so if i were you id try that. later john

I use 'frost plug' heaters-after being plugged in a couple hours, the engine thinks it's a July day-

    Johnno,
I had the same problem about 8 yrs. ago after an engine rebuild. Every time I ran the engine for about 5-10 sec the filter would ballon out and then burst. I had friends and neighbors donating oil filters just to witness this for them selves. My bro-inlaw was standing to the right of the car when one blew. It left a silouhet of him on the wall from the oil splatter  and remind you it was in the middle of summer when this happened with 10w30. When all the fun was over it ended up being a faulty pressure relief valve spring in the oil pump :Dou: . Changed the spring and the problem went away. And was on a brand new, never been used befor timing cover and oil pump setup I, don't ya just love cars. Hope this helps and good luck with the fix and getting back to them :3gears: :3gears: :3gears:

    Johnno,
May want to try a K&N, Napa gold or a Moroso filter they are made from thicker steel. Don't want to blow a filter at 100 plus mph. :Dou:

10-30 motor oil cured my problem...............but with a noticeable noise in the drivers side rear.............to a novice(me)sounds like a bent pushrod or a collasped lifter........not a good start to my day......

    Johnno ASSHOLE

Thank God I got the lifter to pump up!!!! That was not a good sound I was hearing this morning. Of course I like to error on the side of caution and did'nt want to run my engine making noise...however with another set of experienced ears (Thanks Dave) and 5-10 minutes of running it went away. Sounds real nice with a few small exhaust leaks.
Question...do I need to adj. the roller rockers now that this engine has broken in (2000 miles and like 50 passes last year)
Question...in the short time running with what I believe to be a collasped lifter is there any damage to the lifter or pushrod
Question... am I ok to beat on the car at Atco with the 10-30 Castrol GTX in there
Thanks in advance to any more info you guys have for me
    Later Johnno

    Johnno,
It never hurts to check/adjust the roller rockers. Sometimes a lifter will bleed down. If the engine is shut off and a valve is at full lift, the lifter can bleed down. It usually pumps right up within a minute at most, but with the cold weather and thick oil you were using, the oil had to warm to get it fill the lifter. Shouldn't be a problem with lifter or pushrod. Take the valve covers off and check all the pushrods if you want. Actually, you want to use the thinnest oil that will give you the oil pressure you need. 11-12 psi/1000 RPM. So if you are shifting at 6000 RPM, you want to see 70 psi at 6000. If you have that with 10w/30, you are good to go.

Thanks Larry......and please elaborate on if this is common to happen to the #7..any time I've had a start-up noise it was from the drivers side rear or I lost prime once and it was noise coming from the same area.......
Any way I'll let you listen to it next week or at the Spring meet.....seems to be fine now

    Well,
The driver's side rear would be the last to get the oil. Does that oil pump setup you have pressurize the front and rear passenger side of the block? Oil would flow through the passenger side galley first, across the front cam bearing to the drivers side galley. Johnno, I'd switch over to a quality synthetic, and use the thinnest oil you can get away with that will give you the pressure you need. Starting a motor with 20W/50 dino oil in the cold weather is not a good thing. I'd be nervous about doing that. Synthetic flows faster in the cold, and holds it viscosity better when it heats up. That's the way to go IMHO.
