I plan on running a Poston GS-112, possibly but not very likely a 110, cam on my 430, with other modifications. I was wondering which torque convertor and if a switch pitch, how to set up the switch. I plan on running poston's switch pitch PE3000, which is 3000 in high, and 1100 in low. First, what size converters work with a TH400? Second, there are a few ways to activate the hig/low setting, im wondering which one you guys think will work best for a street/strip, cruising 430, with a TH400, plan on installing overdrive, with 3.42's: First one is: "If you have a 60 Foot time of 1.6 seconds, you set the timer to 1.6 seconds. When the brakes are on, the converter is in high stall and then 1.6 seconds after you release the brakes, the converter will go into low stall. Set the timer to zero and the converter will automatically swith from high to low stall for normal street driving. Features an on-off position with a switch to control stall speed manual." Second is: Cant find it now, but it was described as: When you have the brakes activated, the converter is in high stall, when the brakes are released, it switches into low stall. what is your guy's opinion?
You make it sound like you have not decided which type of converter you are going to use. You must have a switch pitch transmission, you can not just put a switch pitch converter in any TH400. If do go with the switch pitch setup I would suggest option #1.
i am ordering the conversion kit also. is it better to have the converter in hig for the first gear, possibly second? or just high when your at a stop, low while youre driving
For daily driving, you wont need high stall at all, though it helps calm down a big cam at idle. The original setup was a microswitch attached to the throttle linkage that would trigger high stall at closed throttle, and another switch to trigger high stall at throttle. I kept the switch for closed throttle to help out the big camshaft (some people wire to the brake lights, same idea). I use a microswitch on the shift lever to trigger high stall whenever I want, usually I let off the switch before the 1-2 shift. Devon
Steven, Option1 is the best way to go IMHO. "First one is: "If you have a 60 Foot time of 1.6 seconds, you set the timer to 1.6 seconds. When the brakes are on, the converter is in high stall and then 1.6 seconds after you release the brakes, the converter will go into low stall. Set the timer to zero and the converter will automatically swith from high to low stall for normal street driving. Features an on-off position with a switch to control stall speed manual." You're talking about the Poston SP controller box. I have this on my car, and it works great. I have never seen another member of this BB with one. IMHO, this is the best way to control a switch pitch. It gives alot of versatility for the street and strip.
When I raced ol' Thumper it had a switch pitch 4000 in it,ran high 10's then,I had it connected to the bright light switch on the floor, after launching by the time I moved my left foot to the switch I was just past the 60 ft and I'd go into low stall ,this was before the 2nd shift.I played with many different points on the track to switch over, even leaving it in high stall, the best et was switching over about the 60' mark. The controller PAE has is the cats ass, thats the way I'd go.Its a poor mans delay box. gary
