I have a friend who posed the question to me about how little end play is acceptable between the flywheel and the TQ. ( 455, TH400 ) He has apparently lost a front pump before because it wasn't fully engaging the pump splines. He currently has it set between 3/8" and 7/16" and wants to know if that is acceptable. Seems like that would be OK but thought I'd mention it here to see if anyone else has feedback for him. Thanks!

Seems like an awful lot to me. Look at the drive notches in the end that engage the pump, that's just about how deep they are so if he's running that much play it's no surprise he's trashing the pump.

I think he had way more than that which is why he dropped it back to where it is presently. I seem to remember that they had well over an inch in stock configuration but maybe I am slipping in my old age!

An inch of end play? Maybe we're not talking about the same thing here. It's the distance the TC will move fore and aft if unbolted from the flex plate, right? I was always told that 3/16" was about right. Much less and you risk binding up, any more and you risk disengaging the pump. There may be a tranny that will tolerate that much but I've never seen it. (Of course it's been quite awhile since I looked at a TH400 too.)

That sounds like the info he is looking for! As I say, like Jim, it has been a while since I have worked on a TH400 car doing stuff like this, I just seem to remember that there was around an inch of back and forth end play and I remember that I, too, always thought they had excessive end play. He'll be happy to have this info. Thanks!
