I had to remove the posi this weekend (spider gears welded themselves to the shaft). This unit splits in half does anybody have the torque specs? It really stinks when you pay the money just to make one pass.
    Thanks Rick

mmm I looked in my books.

The unit that splits in half I believe is the Borg Warner posi unit. I dont think you would have the Power-Lok.

Cone style frictions. The 77 manual says "The Borg Warner Unit is not repairable except for side bearings and must be replaced with either a Chevrolet or an Eaton Positraction differential unit, if service is necessary."

Now, they are talking about the friction surfaces when they say that it cant be repaired. However, it might be difficult to find the torque specs you are looking for if the unit is considered 'non-repairable'.

Sorry, I couldnt find the specs in my literature.

Have you tried calling a GM dealer?

You could always torque it to exactly GoodAndTight.....

Edit: now that i think of it, I think the Auburn aftermarket diffs are this style as well. Maaaybe you could find specs that they use on their website or something? Good luck!

Take a look at the bolts that hold the halves together. Measure diameter and pitch of fastener. (Example 3/8-24). Determine grade of fastener to the best of your ability. Look in any number of various fastener tables(internet) and look for torques specs that apply.

If you can't do this take one of the bolts to the most knowledgeable hardware huy around or automotive machine shop and ask for help in a nice manner

20 - 25 foot lbs. on the bolts that hold the posi together. DO NOT just tighten one to spec all the way progressively work criss cross from eac other like a tire and progressively get tighter till you reach all at torque spec.

Make sure that you do not have the spider gears riding on top of each other when re assembling and use axle shafts in the ends to keep the splines of the side gear and cone aligned so that when you reassemble the rear you can get the axle shaft back into the unit with out the 2 being miss aligned. Good luck, Jim

Thanks For the info. Too late on the alignment of the side gear and cone. Had to scratch the old noodle on that one, got one side done, now the next side tomorrow.
    Thanks again Rick
