My 84 has 3.73's. If I could, I'd change them out for a 3.42 or even a 3.23. I'm past the torque peak all the time.

I have the 3/4 ton 10 1/2" ring gear, so I'm screwed on that one. 3.73's are the highest available ratio I've found for that rearend. The 9 1/2 was available in the 3/4 ton as well. More ratios available for that one.

Even past the torque peak it still pulls like a train, just uses more gas than it needs to. My engine's a bone-stock 74 Electra motor; had 168,000 on it when I put in the truck.

    Thanks Greg,

What kinda mileage do you squeeze outa the thing with the 3.73's ? Also what size tire do you have on it. I assume you have had a trailer hooked up to it ? Any thing in specific I should watch out for in your opinion ??? Thanks again .......

I'm not trying to hijack the thread here Dave but have a similar question on a different project.

I'll be dropping a '70 Buick 350/4bbl from a GS into a 1950 Willys pickup and looking to maybe swapping cams for maximum low end grunt. I'll have either a TH350 or TH400 behind it coupled to an NP205 transfer case, Dana 44 front and either Dana 44 rear or Ford 9". I'll be running 4.56 gears and 35" tires (equivalent rpm-wise to 28" tire and 3.55 gear).

    The 350 is a stock .030 rebuild on the 315/410 '70 GS 350 motor.
I thought I'd swap to a Performer dual-plane intake (if they make one for the 350) and possibly a cam.

Custom radiator might be in order.

Comments & suggestions please? This will not be a tow rig, but a steet brawler and some snow, mountain trail work.. no rock crawling, etc.

    Thanks.

Gary, do yourself a favor and find a th400 with Dana300 transfer case out of an early 70's wagoneer with guess what..Buick 350. strong, compact, and better low range gearing. Should be had for dirt cheap too.

You know what jeep stands for don't you?

Funny you should mention that Adam. Just this afternoon in Battle Mountain I was looking at a '70 Wagoneer, Buick 350, TH400 but couldn't ID the xfer case. It's cast iron with pinion yokes instead of slip colars, like an NP205. Problem was the xfer shift linkage is gone at it looks like a piece of the cast is broken. I'll be over there tomorrow and snap some pictures - maybe you can ID the broken part. They wanted $1000 for the engine, trans, xfer and rear end (they pull it). The rear is too narrow for the Willys and $1K is too much for all that. They did think the engine ran when parked and offered to try and fire it up. Would probably require a rebuild anyway.

Another odd thing was the connection from tranny to engine. There was a cast iron 1" spacer/adapter, almost as if the tranny were not Buick pattern and was adapted with some funky looking converter setup and the 1" adapter. Do you know what that's about?

Got a Scout II front end there today. Dana 44, correct pumpkin position. Will have to do some mods to spring perches but it'll work just fine.

I can buy a running 350 for less than it would cost to build one I'm thinking.

I'll ask what they want for the engine, trans, xfer tomorrow. $500 I might jump.

    Thanks bud.
