I have a TH400 that is leaking some where and today when I moved it It was banging into gears. And the tranny fluid is B and M Trick shift fluid and its a Redish Milky white Color. Does anyone know How to fix this?

    John,

What part of Ohio you from? I grew up in Dayton.

Two things come to mind here. Milky white in color. Either you have water in your transmission fluid (not very likely unless the radiator is bad) or what you are seeing is foam. If the transmission is low on fluid it can cause it to bang into gear. This can also cause the fluid to become foamy. Fix your leak, check to make sure the radiator is ok, fill the fluid and see what happens.

If you have water in the fluid you should drain as much fluid as you can. I would put a plug in the pan and drain it fill with new run for a few minutes, drain and fill again. Do this 3 or 4 times, each time running the engine a little bit longer.

Kelly, Im from Delaware, Its about 40 mins. north of Columbus.

Each time you drain and re-fill do you use new fluid or can you re-use the fluid if its not milky white? -John

I would use new fluid, you want to get as much water out as you can. The water will ruin the inside of the transmisson. The pan holds 4 or 5 quarts, but the transmission holds like 10 or 11, so it's impossible to change all the fluid at once. The torque converter alone holds at least a quart (depending on the size). This may sound like overkill, but if you don't get all of the water out you can ruin the transmission and end up rebuilding it.

After you have done it a couple of times you will have removed most of the water. I would drive it around some making sure to use all gears and reverse also. Then change it again. Continue to do this until you feel comfotable that you have all of the water removed. Also if you have a transmission cooler you will need to flush it as well.
