Now I cool my trans fluid going to the stock water radiator then to a smaller oil radiator in front.
I'am planig to upgrade to an all aluminium radiator.
I'd like to know if, not passing trough the water radiator, but directly to the oil radiator is a good solution if not better, as the water can get hot.
As aluminium radiator with oil cooling passage are expensive.

    Thank

Running the fluid through the radiator is a very efficient way to drop the trans oil temperature down to the same temp as the water. This works great for most cases.

In the instance that you need to cool your tranny fluid even further, then I would run the fluid through the radiator first, then the supplemental tranny cooler. That way the temperature drops to approximately the water temperature in the radiator, then drops even further when exposed to the air.

Cooling the trans fluid with inside the liquid radiator and another air cooled oil radiator would be best and provide the best peace of mind. If you're not gonna use the engine's cooling system to cool the trans then you're gonna want to find the absolute largest oil cooler possible, and maybe hook up a trans fluid temp guage so you know its not getting too hot.

of course, the type of cooling you require depends on whether or not u drag race or tow a trailer or just drive the car . my 72 gs 350 had a trans cooler almost the length & width of the rad. i believe that someone probably towed with the car, way back when.
when i restored my car i removed this cooler & connected the tranny lines to the rad since the car does not tow nor race. i do, however keep an eye on the trans fluid as to colour & smell & feel .
