What trans did a 430 v8 come with and how do i tell what i have in it now? It seems to shift 3 times...but it just seems way to low geared! Thanks :3gears:
what year is it ? in 67 it could be a switch pitch 400 . yet 68-69 were the standard 400 turbo , yes a three speed auto . look the site around for pan identification . if someone doesnt chime in first
im not sure on year...guy i bought it from did not know..on the rear of the block it has stamped "430" and below that is "1383424" on the belhousing is stamped "C11"
well it could be anything from a 350 turbo to a 400 turbo then. yeah describe what ya see or post a pic .
350 turbo ? is there a vacumn modulator ( canister looking thing with a vacumn line attached ) on the right rear of the trans ?
To me it looks most like the one on the right in the first pic in that post, it seems to be a long tail shaft like the one in the middle on the 2nd to last pick ..
Here you go This should help. There are alot of transmissions on here, ill try to find a simpler pic. Its prolly a TH350 or a TH400. # 1 below is a 2 speed. #2, #5, #6, and #7 below are 4 speeds. Good luck. 1 - Aluminum Powerglide 14 bolts 2 - TH200 Metric 11 bolts 3 - TH350 13 bolts 4 - TH400 13 bolts 5 - TH200-4R 16 bolts 6 - TH700-R4, 4L60, 4L60E 16 bolts 7 - 4L80E 17 bolts
Most like #6??? Wierd, thats supposed to be a 700R4, also known as the 4l60E. They have 4 gears though But they do resemble a TH350 alot. Hmm, when you get in your car next time, shift through all the gears, one by one. Its should go, P, R, N, D, 2, 1. You will start in P, and should move down FIVE spaces. Im thinking maybe you are selecting D without overdrive and it is a 700R4??? If it is, then you should move down six spots. P,R,N,D(over drive),D,2,1. Otherwise, maybe its not a GM transmission???? Any ideas folks?
Yes...its like no# 6 but it tapers up sharply like in my cell pic...it shifts p,r,n,d,2,1st... The car had a V6 2 speed originly...im shifting thru all the detents though!
Can you count the bolts in the pan. That will help narrow it down. Also.... your shifter linkage might be stopping it from shifting into the 1st gear (if it's an OD trans). I think the only way to tell for sure would be to undo the linkage and move the tranny shaft itself and see how many detents it has. But before you do all that... how many bolts are in the pan? :TU:
ok...i went under many times...its got 13 bolts and has a corner more like no#3 must be a th 350? ... its just that pic does not taper up in the back like mine?
Might try to buy a few pan gaskets and hold them up to the pan. Witchever one matches should tell you what you have.
