Good to see it found its way into its cozy new home. You gonna be working on it this weekend since football isn't on!!!

Will swing by and lend a hand if you need, or just drink beer :beer

    Good work, Frank,

Now you're talkin my language! You're on!

I plan to finish it up Saturday, if all goes well. However, it won't have an exhaust system for a few days, but that won't stop test drives!

I use Jerry at American Muffler in Bertram... he quoted me full duals, manifold to N25 bumper (no tips, of course) installed, with my mufflers, at $120.00.

    Try that at Midas!

Great guy, great work. One man shop. I got to know him through the Austin F body Club...

The 455 is totally in and running pretty well. One small problem, though:

It has an engine tick under load; I guess it's a lifter. It isn't too loud, but certainly noticeable. When I stop, it goes away if I pop it into neutral, but stays if I leave it in gear (TH350). The car runs very smoothly and doesn't miss or anything. Starts instantly, idles fine, no tick when I rev it up. It ticks only under load. At higher RPM, it becomes a squeal, like a belt is loose.

    1) Do you think it is a lifter?

    2) Is there a trick like some additive that may unstick this lifter, or heavier oil (I have 10/30 now) or run a quart of diesel fuel through it for a few minutes and change the oil?

Also, this is wierd: I have 40 PSI oil pressure (good guage) at cruising speed, hot, but when I let off and coast, the pressure RISES a little to 46 or so. Related?

    Thanks, Frank

    Frank,
Are the belts new? I've heard belts rattle and tick, and you would swear it's a bearing in one of the accessories. A lifter noise is unmistakeable. It increases and decreases with engine speed. Also, a loose flexplate will tick in gear, and knock in neutral, usually. Oil pressure should rise and fall with RPM, when the engine is fully warm. Is this an electrical gauge or mechanical? What kind?

Are you sure it isn't an exhaust leak? If you're not sure I'd check the manifolds first.

Good idea Rick. Frank, an exhaust leak can sound like a tick. Lots of times, you can feel the leak if you move your hand around, where the exhaust manifold meets the head(don't burn yourself).

Larry and Rick, the belts are new, but I don't think that's it... The problem is, I cant check under the hood to listen to it, because it purrs like a kitten at all RPM with the hood open. The motor mounts are tight. It seems to be getting better, though. I only have about 20 miles on , and not only did it sit for 5 months, but I turned it upside-down with it full of oil once, so no tellin what got contaminated. I think I'll put a quart of transmission fluid in the crankcase or diesel maybe and let it run a minute and change the oil and put 20 w 50 in it.

Think that would be a bad idea?

And the oil pressure thing... I have an AutoGage mechanical gauge with an oversized line... I'm confidant it is fine; I had it before with the 350 and it didn't do this. The pressure rises a few pounds under deceleration. Maybe the oil is too thin.

I Googled the stuff, and you'd think it was the best thing since sliced bread.

Aviation, marine, RV's, industrial equipment-- everybody loves it. I'll try some.
    Thank you, Larry.

It's been around a very long time. You can find it anywhere. You can use it in the gas or oil. Good stuff.

Too funny, I have "several" uncles and my grandfather that will tell you "put some Marvel Mystery Oil in it" to cure any problem you have, you lost your leg drink some Marvel Mystery Oil, car got stolen "well that wouldn't have happened if you would have put Marvel Mystery Oil in it." I think cowboy's used to give it to their horses when they were sick too. I've used it and it has cured odd noises under the hood, how? I have no idea!!!!!!!! :TU:

You may want to just re-torque those exhaust manifold bolts and at the collectors. You should probably do that anyways after that new motor heats up and cools off a couple of times.

A tick or knock could be an exhaust manifold leak, loose converter bolts or......................It could be what happened to Wolverines 455 after install at Salem. C'mon Larry, tell 'em what else it could be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well  It could be a slightly dented oil pan, that allowed the crank to smack the pan on every revolution. But I think that noise, Frank would recognize. You didn't drop the motor, did you Frank?

No, thank goodness. It's idling in the driveway right now with a quart of MMO and a new filter, and sounds fine; no unusual noises at all. It is definitely not exhaust.

See Larry was right...Just like My uncle..Now that you've put MMO in it. You will be able to run 9 second 1/4's, well over 200 on the highway and your car will never need another rebuild.
