Hello all. After almost a year in the making, looks like I will finally be picking up my engine from Scotty's Racing engine. The question now, how to transport it back home, close to 300 miles on the back of a pickup. I was looking at the stand from summit, but not sure if it will work. Anyone have any experience transporting an engine and what crate they used on such engines to transport it?

Those stands are cheap chinese junk. The only time I used one to transport a small block, one of the wheels punched a hole through my pickup bed. When I took the engine off of it, it practically fell apart.
I'd recommend building one yourself out of wood, or getting one from Todd Miller. If you get one from Todd, ya might think about leaving the wheels off of it until you are safely home.

FWIW, I have always just set them in an old tire, but I've never had anything as nice as the one you are about to pick up.

Thank you. I took up the old engine, 400, in an old tire to him so he can reuse parts into the 455 he was going to build for me. I would build one, but not easy without know the dimensions. Plus all my woodworking gear is on the shelf that is located above the car in the garage. Easier said then done.

I've transported many engines hundreds of miles on a old tire sitting on the bed of the truck. Simply lower the engines oil pan into the center and then strap all 4 corners. It wont move. Wrap it in a tarp if you feel the weather might turn bad.

I buzz together a cradle made out of 2x4's with wood screws for fresh rebuilds, only takes 5-10 minutes and a old tire or 2 for the used dirty ones. Be careful, the 455 oil pan clearance is is tight in the front area and it doesn't take much of a dent to cause an interference. Don't ask how I know but a stud welder/puller works well to fix the problem. Nothing sucks worse when you install a new motor and first fire up goes "dunk dunk dunk dunk dunk" again, don't ask how I know.

Do yourself a favor and purchase an engine cradle from TA for transport, to protect your investment. TA 4920b.

I don't recommend that you use any transport stand that does not bolt to the bell housing, for transit.. those stands are ok to keep a motor off the ground in your shop, not so much for bouncing down the road for 300 miles.

Say Hi to Scotty for me..

I have one of the 455 engine cradles that Mike Phillips sells that you can borrow if you will pay for shipping from me to your engine builder and then ship it back to me once you get it home. It may end up costing you more having to ship it twice then just buying a brand new one, but I don’t know if he has them in stock and how much they cost plus shipping. Just an option for you.

Doesn't this say more about your pickup than the stand?

Will let Scotty know. I searched on TA website but couldn’t find such part number. I will call them Monday. Any idea how much they run?

That's because the website is not up to date, BUT, you can download a pdf of the latest catalog.

12 year old truck in the rust belt? Ya, it probably had something to do with it. It wasn't that rusty at the time.
Small steel wheel on just the right spot with tight straps. My trip was 850 miles.
I did have four 455's in the same truck the year before. Each was sitting on a tire. No problems on that trip.
