triple gauges

    whats up fellas i am about to change my timing case/oil pump, because i was getting a popping noise coming from my carb. My buddy told me he had th esame problem in his 76 skyhawk and it was the oil pressur, but anyway should i look for a timing case of a 350 or a v6? This is my first time installing gauges, are there any pointers you guys can give me to make this easier? Oh yeah i heard that mechanical where better than electrical how do you tell the difference. THANKS

    I hate to say this, but unless your timing chain has jumped a tooth or two, your cover and the oil pressure will not cause a popping back through the carb. Buying a new cover may be a waste of money. You have some other ignition or fuel (carb) related problem. More than likely it is not an oil pressure problem. Get #1 on TDC and make sure your distributor is pointing to #1 wire tower...........You emailed me twice asking my advice..... :Dou:

    Darius listen to Mike. You are most likely leaning out on your fuel mixture which will cause poping back through your carb. It could be from your timing being too advanced or from a carb related issue. Don't wast money on a new timing cover until you are positive it is a problem. At this point I don't think it is.

    Darius,
    Listen to Mike and the guys. Your popping through the carb is either a miss or lean condition. Check your plugs and wires, and check for a vacuum leak.
    As far as gauges go, there is no difference in accuracy according to Autometer. BUT, mechanical gauges are easier to read accurately. The reason for this is mechanical gauges have a 270* sweep as opposed to the electrical gauges 90* sweep. With 270*, you have more lines on the gauge and it is easier to read at a glance. Below is a picture of my gauges under the dash. The oil pressure and temperature gauges are mechanical, the voltmeter is of course electrical. Notice the sweep on the gauges. The temperature gauge is IMHO the best on the market. It measures 120 to 240* There is another that measures 140 -280*, that to me is a waste, I shut my motor off if I see 220* Mechanicals are easy to install, they need no electrical power except for lighting. If you go with a mechanical oil pressure gauge, get the copper tubing, they come with nylon and that is an accident waiting to happen.

    You said in your emails that you were on a tight budget...... you can pick up a set of gauges (oil pressure and water temp) for about $35-$45 .....

    Try setting your timing with a light. I know you said you set it by ear, but you need to find what it is set at to see if you have a problem there or somewhere else. Check TDC on #1 and find out where the timing is.... this will cost you nothing. The next thing would be to check your carb out alittle more...... this you will need to have a friend that knows a little bit about carbs to help you. You said it was a Holley if I remember right.

    seem to be really nice. they are mechanical and I changed the oil to a copper line. and for 16 bucks you cant beat the price and there 2 5/8" gauge.. come with red lite covers that are removeable. the size is nice under the middle of the dash. Just wish i put my oil gauge on the right cause my knee gets in the way.

    Great minds think alike!:grin:

    That's the exact setup I just ordered from Summit. 4321, 4332 and 4391. Went with the steel braided lines instead of copper. Definately not nylon tubing.

    SunPro and Stewart ... had some nice ones but I'm partial to Autometer for some reason I couldn't give. :)

    I think I'm gonna pick my gauges and tubing from the local speed shop... I never see anyone there and I really don't want to see it go out of busines... not that my 80 dollar purchase is gonna do much, but still...

    well guys i figured out the problem, you guys were right it wasn't the oil pressure. I changed my timing case/oilpump anyway because the old one was leaking. I took off my passenger side valve cover and there it was:jd:, my pushrod broke, and when that broke it also broke my rocker arm :Dou:. I installed my gauges,with copper line. What is good oil pressure, and operating temp for the 350. Appreciate all info will be back on the road in a couple of days
