I have a 72 skylark custom with a mild 71 455, 10 bolt rear with cutouts is this the 8.5 10 bolt corporate? how many splines? any opinions on these l/s units i think auburn has better splitting capabilities but how long do the cones last? eaton is can be rebuilt but would'nt want the hassle car is not a daily driver

Yes that is the 8.5 10 bolt corporate axle. Stock spline count is 28 spline. I just had a 1971 rear built with 30 spline Moser axles and Eaton Posi with 3.73's.
The 71-72 Buick 8.5 10 bolts with their bolt in axles are one strong rear and aftermarket support is excellent. I've heard the Eaton is better than the Auburn.

thanks for the clarification i think i,m going to go with the detriot true track because of its maintenance free gear type design i just hope it can handle the torque of my planned upgrades hopefully around 535 ft/lbs

    alec296 i need another buick

    eaton is rebuildable
the auburn needs to be set back to them for rebuilds
the cones wear and need to be machined to match
the eaton seems better on that fact
    but both good units

The Eaton is a much better unit. I went through 2 Auburns in 5 years. The Eaton has been in my car for 5 years now with no problems. You can even buy the 800 ft/lb upgrade for the Eaton. I bought mine through Randy's Ring and Pinion. http://www.ringpinion.com/ They beat Summit and Jeg's prices by a lot. The Eaton is by far a much better design.
