I bought the quart of black / Aqua spatter from the Parts Place.
    http://www.thepartsplaceinc.com/oca...YearList=1967&Search_Keyword=aqua/black quart

Their instructions say it doesn't require a clear top coat to protect, but it doesn't say to NOT use a clear either.

Has anybody used their product? Not sure if I should just spray it and call it good like they say, or if I should let it sit for the 5-7 days to cure and then just run some duplicolor satin clear over it.

    Opinions/thoughts/ideas are welcome.

the spatter paint is waterbased. you have to clearcoat the spatter.
wait a few days, with the trunk lid open, to allow the spatter paint to dry & cure. then apply a copius amount of clearcoat.
    been there; done that.

Don't rush the clear, I did and it lifted the paint! You have to make sure the splatter is dry.

Is rattle can clear ok? Like Duplicolor satin/semi gloss clear?

Or do I need to go buy a quart of paint and spray it?

Seems your trunk paint is petroleum based and requires no clear coat. So, I would follow instrcutions.

It is a mix of water based and petro based. Note it says flush with water and then mineral spirits.

What is the problem with the water based paint? It seems houses are painted with water base and do fine. Why are trunk paints such a problem?

how can the spatter be petroleum based if u thin it with water?
i used krylon (exterior) clearcoat on the spatter paint on my car.

Spatter paint works because it has both water based and oil based paint in it. The main background color is typically water based and then there are drops of oil based in there. When you spray, mostly the background paint comes out but also some if the oil based drips come too resulting in the spatters.

All that being said, I still don't know why the water based paint is a problem down the road.

One tip I use is to seal your floor first with black epoxy primer; helps with coverage of the trunk paint.

it is sealed up pretty well, I just finished painting the floor from firewall to trunk so I'm not too concerned with rust getting started again, just want it to look right afterwards.

And by right, I mean at least sorta like it came that way. This project is by no way factory correct, but much more resto-mod in nature.
