So my car has been sitting out getting beaten by the sun for years now. It don't think it had a great paint job to start with, probably an Earl Shieb cheepy my grandfather did. I don't think it has much clear coat left, if it ever had any at all. There are stained spots from bird poop and leaves. I have been trying to buff it out with an electric buffer with a foam pad and turtle wax type polishing compound. It has made a minor improvement, but nothing like I was hoping, and it is not getting the stains out. Should I be using a more serious compound? Can any body recommend a product that is ideal for this application? Also is the foam pad the best idea, should be using a wool pad? Thanks in advance for any tips!

You're going to need a high speed buffer with a wool wheel and some 3M Perfect-it 3000 compund. It's about $35 a bottle, but worth it.

I do this with every car I have owned:

    Wash car thouroughly.

Wet sand with 2000 grit (1000) if the oxidation is THICK. Be careful on the edges....better yet, stay off the edges.

    Wash car again.

Buff with high speed buffer, wool pad, and 3m Perfect-it 3000.

    Wash car again.

Buff with high speed buffer and a foam pad, with 3M swirl mark remover.

    Wash car again.

    Wax!

Your arms will hate you, but the car will look great.

Here are two threads where I did this exact porcedure:

Ok this is going to sound crude but this is what I do to bring a car back to shine. Pour some Comet (yes comet from under the sink) into a bowl and add some water to it. Take a medium brisseled scrub brush and dip it into the bowl and apply to your car, you need to scrub evenly and dont stay in one spot for to long because you will rub through the paint. Try this in an area like the rocker panel to get the feel for it. You might have to do this two times depending on how bad the paint is. Now go over this area with some rubing compound. now finish it off with wax. You will be amazed on the out come. You are probally just looking to get the paint presentable enough to drive till you can afford a paint job. Try it it will be the cheapest fix for now.

comet ? that has to scratch the surface quite a bit. i can see perhaps using bon ami glass polish powder instead.

The Comet gets the oxidized paint cleaned up, the rubbing compound brings the paint back out and the wax cleans it up pretty darn nice. Ive done it several times with great results. Like I said try it in a little spot and see for yourself. I just did a 1962 Chevy Pick Up that was so far gone and it now shines like you wouldnt believe.
