Hello all, i have a problem with the 400 tranny in my wildcat. Every time i let the car sit for a couple of days, there`s a huge amount of fluid on the floor and i just can`t find where it`s coming from. I already replaced the input seal and pan gasket. When the car is running, it doesn`t leak at all. Before i replaced the input seal it was leaking from there, after fixing it worked for a couple of months and now it`s leaking again and i don`t know where. Any help will be appreciated. Joe
It could also be the Speedometer gear housing . Both the "O" ring AND the speedo gear shaft seal. You have to clean it good and find exactly where it is coming from. When a car sits for a while the level in the pan goes up . When you say " A LOT " how much do you mean ? If its a puddle on the floor it doesn't take much fluid to make a 1 foot in diameter puddle. Try pouring liquid on the floor and see what I mean. Don't forget the Cooler lines too.
The seal at the speedo gear is fine, it`s completely dry there. The dipstick o-ring is fine, checked that, tranny cooler lines are not leaking. Like i said, it`s not leaking when the car is standing and running, but it`s leaking while driving. The puddle is more like 3 feet in diameter every time.
Here is long shot. Could the vents be plugged? It could be building up pressure and forcing fluid past a seal and once the pressures return to normal it stops leaking.
How can you have a puddle of 3 feet in diameter if your driving ?? How much fluid are you adding ?? With that much fluid you have to see it sprayed all over the underside of the car.
Sorry if you misunderstood me because of my bad english. The car is leaking while driving and when it sits for a couple of days. It's not leaking when i let it idle in Park or neutral. I try to add to right amount every time, but sometimes i just have to guess. Yes, the underside is covered in atf. I haven't checked the vents, but will do.
How about putting the car up on jackstands and cleaning the underside ? Then start the car and have someone run it in gear while you keep an eye on where the leak starts from. You will need to have the car nearly level and the jackstands under the Rear Axle and lower control arms. Its almost impossible to see where its coming from unless you start with a clean area. There is one vent. Right side of the trans near the top . You will see it . Its a small tube. Perhaps you are putting too much Trans fluid in it to begin with. Trans fluid needs to be checked on a level surface with the trans in PARK or NEUTRAL and the engine running at idle . Trans fluid will catch fire . Be careful if its coating the undercarridge .
It could also be the tranny rear extension housing oil seal? If the car sits for a while, or is over filled, the atf drains out of the converter, and the excess will seep past the extension housing seal. The result is also a good under coating of atf on everything past the extension housing when the car is driven. This happens every winter on my ST400, when put away for the long winter sleep. :TU:
Thanks for the help so far. I will pour some indicator fluid in the tranny and hopefully see were it leaks. Another question: Will an overfilled transmission cause the car to perform worse? Because from a standing take off it doesn`t accelerate well, no tire smoke at all, or is that with not enough fluid? The engine is perfectly fine. Thanks
Unless the transmission is slipping, and I think you would know that, it is not responsible for your engine's lack of low end performance. Overfilling the transmission will just result in fluid foaming and leaking out of the vent tube. That might show in some shift irregularities. Transmission fluid heats up as you drive, and it expands. It needs to be checked when the fluid is hot, after a minimum 20 minutes of highway type driving. With the fluid cold and the engine running in Park, the fluid level will be about 1/4" below the add fluid line. When the fluid is hot, the level will read full.
Poor low rpm torque could be a slipping stator clutch in the torque converter. If so it just turns into a 1:1 torque in-out, instead twice as much out as in. However this isn't a leak, unless the fluid is heating up and going out a vent. Bruce Roe
