Hi, I have a 77 Electra and the manual i have says the tranny is a Turbo Hydramatic Transmission. I was wonderin what engines will bolt up to the tranny properly? I have an olds 403 in there now. Also, what would happen if one(my dad) accedentally put Mercon V fluid in this transmission It calls for Dexron II?? Is it gonna die on me or will a tranny fluid drain and refill be fine?

The Hydramatic division of General Motors made many different transmissions. They are all called Turbo Hydramatics. The most common older car transmissions from GM, were the THM-350, and 400, but there were others. Buick Olds, and Pontiac engines all share the same bolt pattern for transmissions. I'm not sure which transmission you have in your Electra, but it could be a THM-350, or a THM-200C, or possibly a THM-200R4. Is it a 4 speed or 3 speed automatic?

Mercon fluid was a Ford designation, and in alot of cases is interchangeable with Dexron. Take a look at the container, it will tell you if there is a problem. Mercon V, is an updated version of Mercon. It should be compatible with Dexron, I wouldn't worry about it.

Its a 3 speed automatic i beleive, if this is of help the shift indicator goes: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, L2, and L1. How else could I ID my transmission??

Oh, and the container didn't say it was interchangable with dexron, but it didn't say it wasn't either. I'll change it just to be safe.

    That's a 3 speed

I look at the pan shape. Someone posted a good picture with different pan shapes. Another tip off is the presence of a vacuum modulator. The 350 has one, and it comes off the back of the transmission.

The metric transmissions, THM 200 used a TV cable to control shift points, and feel.

    This may help:
