i tore into the rear out of 8.2 rear from a '67 gs340 .as i tell this , dont worry . thie car was rusty and had a dent in about every panel . no title and a blown motor . i did save all all trim. i wanted to give the car a last and fun run , so i raced it a few years ago fas a street stock (3/8 mile dirt track) the car had a few different 355-358 " chevys (10.5:1, 550 solid lifter ) , 350 turbo .ran 2nd gear , 3.90 richmond with a welded open carrier running 8 " wheels with mccreary's american all star g-60 's . car was very competitive . this pic is of the driver axle . the pass was fine. some wear, but not twisted .in the past i've had some twist in my skylark with 3.08 's and 4.11's between a 455 and now a 430 .but none this bad . just some thing to think about when it comes to putting some power to these 28 spline axles

a few years back i owned a 70 GS455 4 speed that had some performance enhancements to the motor. i took the car to the dragstrip and bolted on a set of slicks. at the line i dumped the clutch at about 3500 rpm and all i heard was a loud bang.. car didnt move an inch. when i got the car home and pulled the rear cover and i found the passenger axle sheared at the point where the splines start. the drivers axle looked exactly like yours in the picture. in my 3900 lb 66 455 powered skylark i raced with slicks and ran low twelves and a few N20 assisted 11 second passes all with a 66 8.2 rear and never had that problem. hey bob , cool . ive been really curious what would slicks do to the axles in my '66 . it gets no traction with radials , even with the ladder bars. i forgot to mention that had bought a 8.2 posi carrier about 12 years ago that had a piece of axle in the right side . it was hell to get it out . i ended up taking it a part to knock it out , then a slight push , it just fell . it was as long as where the twist stops about 1 3/4 inches ? any more 8.2 axle abuse stories out here ....?
