Two questions

I have a set of 3.08's in my 66 convertible, and the original posi chunk that has a 3.23 ring gear (no I don't have the pinion gear, it got tossed with the trashed axle...sucks having blonde moments :Dou: ). This is going behind a 200 4R.

    Anyway the questions are:

Can I pull the ring gear off my 3.08's and put it on the posi unit?
Can I purchase a pinion and ring gear and install them without expensive "special tools"?

    You can't put a 3.08 pinion gear with a 3.23 ring.

You could get a new ring gear and pinion, get a new crush sleeve and put them in. You need a good 1/2" impact to tighten the pinion nut and crush the sleeve.

If you don't mind some possible noise, you could use the original spacers on each side of the carrier. Not recommended, but I have been lucky many times and put a lot of miles on diff's that I have done this way. Just roll the carrier after the install and put grease on the teeth so you can see where they touch and make sure you don't have too much slack or any binding.

    Good Luck.

I re-read your message. You should be able to use the 3.08 ring gear and pinion together with the spacers in your current rear.

Sorry...I was thinking of putting the 3.08 ring on the posi unit and setting it in the hole.

Doing this sort of thing...mixing carriers & housings without a proper setup...is a coin toss every time. You need to verify backlash, bearing preload and pinion depth to ensure long life without noise.

That brings another couple of questions to mind, if the ring gear is 4213 (3.23) and the other ring gear is 4013 (3.08), is the "13" the pinion gear count and if it is, wouldn't the 3.23 drop in place? The housing number is 9783393 if that makes any difference at all.
