I'm lucky enough to have a place local to me that balances driveshafts, as well as does other driveline related work.

I plan on having this done in the coming weeks and wondered which was the best replacement, most durable front U-joint?

Dana Spicer comes to mind, as I think I have one for the rear in my stash.

Also, when reinstalling the driveshaft, does it have to go back in in the exact position it was removed?

    What say ye?

Exact position (i.e., indexing) is always the standard but after 53 years and numerous probable R & Rs who can tell? But even in the "who can tell" scenario you might as well assume it's always been indexed properly and keep at it.

Indexing is important on a two piece shaft but how do you index a straight driveshaft?

You don't, unless it was welded wrong. Stick it in.
