    Thanks Korrie...

I don't really know if I need it or not but I DO know I would like the Windows Update icon in my task bar to go away....maybe I'll reboot and see what happens...

If the reboot does not remove the Update icon, and you have XP, try using System Restore. That should do the trick.

I've noticed some updates won't install if System Restore is off. In those cases I turn it on, install the update, and then turn it off again.

If your video/graphics work fine, the update might not really matter. I know the ATI cards can be a royal pain anyway.

I don't use the automatic updates - I prefer to pick and choose. There have been occaisions when updates "break" certain applications. For example, we've had Windows Journal Viewer (a non-critical update) cause Acrobat Reader to stop working. I use the latter, but not the former, so I simply don't install it.

If you decide you don't want the update, and don't want to be annoyed by it, you could go to the Windows Update page, find the update, and choose to "hide" it. I've never tried this, so I don't know if it will keep the automatic updates from showing it, but its worth a try.

That will work...I have the SP2 update (which I do not want) hidden and it has stayed hidden for a few months now.

When I build a PC for myself/family/friends i always turn off security center, firewall and automatic updates. I also disable that stupid popup blocker. Then I update P with every update, load a firewall and virus software, and adaware and spybot and we're good to go.

When a news bulletin is released about a new security hole I make sure to update all the PCs.

You can uninstall updates by going into start>settings>controlpanel>AddRemovePrograms, and then on top of the new window there is a checkbox called "Show Updates", then scroll down and you should see a bunch of "hotfixes" i believe, I'm at school, so I cant check what they are called. Try to go to microsoft's website and try to find out what # or the name of that update, try that before system restore.

ALSO, even before you uninstall an update, you can try updating your grafics driver, i found the link, it should be this here

good luck, pm me if you still have problems
