Hi I have a car that has alot of surface rust on the frame and underside of body,no rust through just scaley surface rust and I want to clean it up and protect it for the future but a frame off is out of the question,so what would be an ecomical way to clean it up and coat it?I am willing to get under there and do some work but just need to know any suggestions on how to go about it,Thanks.

    frame resto.

Hi Bruce, i sprayed a frame with surface rust with Rust Check and let it work for about a week and then i wire brushed it and sprayed it the second time and just left it that way and it looked great. you could wipe it down with a cloth and paint it also ... Bill

Spent 2 months under mine (up on jack stands) with the drill and lots of various wire brushes, sandpaper, and a pressure washer !
The rear tranny seal had leaked for some time and oil sprayed a lot of the underside. It cleaned up really nice and I primed and painted the frame after seam sealing and spraying the entire underside of the car body with black rubberized rocker guard and a Shutz gun. There was no exhaust system, no brake/fuel lines, and no drive shaft so everything turned out pretty good, and all the missing components were added after the refinish. A 'frame-on' so to speak. My wife dubbed me 'the creature under the car', but it was well worth the effort, since the exterior of the car was so nice after a complete resto and I just couldn't drive it with the underside looking so shabby !
Here's a hoist pic of the underside. :beer :TU:

    Thanks Bruce ! :TU:
I probably had about a 150/200 hours, or better invested - the long hard part was getting it prep'd. (The gas tank was also off the car.) The painting went real fast once it was ready. I think I went through 2/3 cases of rattle cans, since they were a lot easier to handle in the confined area under the jack stands. A rottisserie or hoist would make the job a little easier ! Make sure you adequately protect the upper surface of the car from all the dust and over spray by covering it - I didn't, and had to clean it up after I was finished, which created extra work ! :Do No:
The end result vastly improved the overall appearance of the car, and was well worth the effort !
LOL on your project Bruce !
