I am trying to paint my booster/master. i bought a rebuilt master and booster that came as an assembly from napa. They were primed with a grey primer, that had a slight amount of rust coming through already. I sanded all of the rusty spots down to metal, and the other spots pretty musch all the way down. I smoothed it abit with 400 grit. I wiped them off real god then shot some self etching primer at it. problem is, most of the primer bled right off like oil on water. what gives?
i was trying to paint some metal in my garage and it kept getting little "eye" spots. A couple problems that come to mind are grease, and cold. You may try to use one of those degreaser paint prep products before spraying the primer, and maybe try painting it in a warmer environment, worked for me nicely. However, i dont understand why self etching primer would do that ?
Any paint type product will do that if applied on a contaminated surface. You hit it on the head with the degreaser stuff. The booster might have been coated with a preservative to inhibit rust during shipping/storage. Temp isn't so much the issue. It should be wipped off with a degreaser, stripped again, degreased again, and re-primed. That should take care of it.
I painted my booster a few years back and it looked pretty good until some brake fluid hits it and runs revealing primer and bare metal again, Ugh!##@!* iam am going replated soon!
