I have a 72 skylark now and some dingleberry undercoated it 3 years back and didn't get it clean enough first, theres rust pushing the undercoat off. I need to get in there with wire wheels and drills and spray some rust converter on it and then re-undercoat. Thats what a body shop said.

Any tips on that process? He said I could do a small area (all 3 steps) and then later do more when I have time, just not to leave it between steps so moisture doesn't get in there. Well I'd be doing this in my garage stall or just outside it.

How about good "converter" I can apply undercoat to and good undercoat brands. I am in Minnesota. Thanks!

I can sympathize, as I am in the process of cleaning the undercarriage of my GN during my refurb project. I was lucky in that I had very little rust, but some undercoating and plenty of grease and grunge. The simplest way is the best, and this is dirty business. If you have access to a pressure washer, this will be a big help. Plenty of the undercoating and rust will blow off when hit with the pressure washer. I jacked up my car, put it up high on stands, and washed the underside twice with the pressure washer. I also got good results with a dish washing scrubby and some Dawn in a bucket. I did small areas, then rinsed. You may also be able to use heat to loosen some of it, but be careful, as you don't want to torch the car. A gasket scraper, elbow grease, and tolerance for filth will go a long way. I then reundercoated the chassis and floor lightly with Duplicolor and Permatex spray bomb undercoating. It looks great. Any real rust should be neutralized, and I hear good things about POR 15, but have not had to use it yet. The spray can stuff is cheap, and light. You would really have to try to build up thick, rust hiding amounts. The ones I used are asphalt based, and somewhat rust retardent by their chemistry. Good luck. RE

    Por15

Thanks, I like the pressure washer idea. I know of POR 15, its a paint though, do they make it in spray cans? I have to brush it on? I don't have a sprayer or anything just a regular guy garage.

This issue has been discussed with pics many times in the archieves. The various techniqes are discussed . There are some special tools made for this including the nifty one made by Snap On. Check on Mike Scally's most recent thread on the topic.

POR15 is great stuff, have used it many times. You can brush it on (the brush marks go away) or thin it slightly with their thinner and spray it. If you spray it you MUST use a respirator. If you get it on your skin clean it off before it dries with their solvent or only time will get it off...don't ask me how I know this :pp There is also some new stuff called Rust Bullet which I have heard good reviews (same as POR15) but I have not used it yet.

Oh, with POR 15 use rubber gloves... vinyl gloves seem to let it through.

if you decide to spray it i would use a cheap $10 cup gun from Harbor Freight or someplace else that sells cheap tools. A good respirator is a must, dont buy it at Harbor Freight. I would also us a plastic lined painters suit, and cover your eyes and all exposed areas of your face with Vaseline, that way the paint has less chance of sticking to your face, unless you wanna look like a racoon for a few weeks. Cover your hair with a painters sock and maybe tie a bandanna over that, the socks tend to let particles in when used by themselves. I have done like 4 cars with Por-15 so far and have always brushed it , but if i were going to spray it this is how i personally would do it. After you are finished throw the cup gun away, it would take too long to clean it and would prbablly never work right again afterwards.
Or you could rent an airless paint sprayer from Home Depot for $60 a day and spray the whole thing in about an hour, when finished just send about 2 gallons of lacquer thinner through the pump and then a couple of gallons of water. Now that i think about it im gonna try the airless sprayer on my Rivi.
If asked what you will be spraying just tell them enamel, its best not to scare them. The airless will be like 10 times fater then the cup gun and with the right tip , ask for a 4-11, you should be able to get a nice finish without any runs. or you could just brush it i guess...........
