"Did our skylarks come with undercoating on front wheel wells or just painted ???" It depends on the year and production plant. Once you give us that info we can probably answer your question. Duane PS. The ones that did come with "undercoating" actually were not undercoated but used Body Schutz. Its a thicker more lumpy product.
72 GS ....what plant ? I have never checked on that besides its a rebody ....I am starting to put my car together and just cant seem remembering if I scraped off anything from front fender wells 8 years ago
undercoating may have been added at dealer when purchased new.we used to do it all the time in the small rural dealer i worked at.it was mainly for noise reduction due to most of the roads in farm country being gravel.
Frank, All 70's-72's came with Body Schutz in the rear wheelhouses to deaden the noise in the body shell. If your car was from Flint, or Framingham the front Wheelhouses were also coated in Body Schutz. The front Wheelhouses of original 71 cars I have seen from Fremont Calif. were painted, not Schutzed (cool word :laugh, or if they were, it was only in the area where the two bolts mount them to the firewall. 72's from Fremont may have been done the same but I am not sure. Maybe someone else could chime in. Duane PS. A lot of the guys use the bed liner material they spray in truck beds to mimic the Body Schutz look.
Drive around with unShutzed(how is that for another new word?) and only painted fender wells and they will not be painted for long.
It doesn't matter if its good or not, if a non-car woman asks to help work on a car.............then let her do it. Duane http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/3m-body-schutz-rubberized-coating-black-08864-p-11270.aspx
It also comes in convenient rattle cans under the alias of black 'rubberized rocker guard' - much easier to use, and doesn't require the use and added expense of a proper Shutz gun to get the splatter pattern that the undercoating has. :TU: Just be careful that the overspray doesn't get on the painted surface of the car !! :eek2:
Did my '66 with the 3M Schutz more than a couple of years ago. The one thing I remember is that one can doesn't go very far.... I think I went through 3 cans to get coverage on the rear ww and a bit of the trunk floor and drops behind the wheel. Best to put a few coats of good black paint down first before applying the Schutz to improve durability and coverage. Duane, how much do you use for a car?
Body Schutz is what we used to call the stuff in Australia. So Shultzey get around.............. well travelled.
If you can get it in rattle cans that's the way to go. Unless you buy a case the spray gun is almost $100.00 Walt, I never installed the stuff, but do know others also stated the cans do not go far. Especially if you do the job correctly. I know on the 70-72 cars the material gets put on "in a stripe" from the rear wheelwells all the way to the rear of the car. The edge basically follows the frame edge back. Duane
