This is for a 70 GS 350: Looking to paint my core suport, inner fenders, underside of hood and possibly the air cleaner. What kind of paint is recommended - Eastwood's underhood Black? Are all these parts all the same sheen from the factory? Any help is grealy appreciated. Are the core suppots and inner fenders the exact same paint? Thanks all!! Bob
I used POR 15 and it looks great. With the added benifit of stopping any rust from getting any worse. I used it on all the parts you mentioned. However it might not be the right black
I mixed it up a bit. Not all of these factory parts were finish painted at the same place using the exact same paint. Under my hood you'll see at least two different versions (maybe three) of semi-gloss or satin black - not to mention the gloss air cleaner.
Thanks everyone - this helps. I guess the air cleaner is definitely a gloss black? I thought it was a satin or semi-gloss. I'll repaint mine. I'm not going for a full concours restoration, rather just something that is accurate. Thanks again. BH
My air cleaner is satin. In my opinion it looks way better han gloss, but to each their own. :beers2: In fact just about everything under my hood is either satin or semi gloss, but mostly satin.
I own a couple of original air cleaner lids I peeled decals off and also peel off the stickers on every original I find in a junkyards and I can tell you without exception they are all gloss black. I mean gloss to the extent you can see youself in detail in the reflection. You can paint the air cleaners satin if you want but I believe that is not correct if that is what you want and I have plenty of proof to go by. POR is not very good for appearance sake. I like the gloss level of Eastwoods Chassis black Satin for many underhood parts.(not air cleaner) it looks very original with a hint of gray.
I'm leaning towards the underhood black (10 - 20% gloss) for inner fenders, core support and under the hood and repainting the air cleaner gloss black. It will be better than its current status and hopefully relatively correct. Attached is what it looked like when I first got the car and what it's like now. Thanks all - more to come Bob
10-20% would be a little too flat for all that stuff judging from original cars I have observed. The 10-20% might be good for the firewall however which was usually a little flatter than the rest of the stuff. I guess no one is really 100% correct with this however. Wahtever shade you like. I just like being as close to original look as possible but there is always a built in opinion curve with everything.
Bob, not sure if you have one but you can buy a correct black heat riser pipe. The silver was all that most sold in the past.
I just did this to my car and it came out excellent.. Caution do not use POR15! it is difficult to work with..... I used Krylon Rust tough Semi Flat its an excellent finish that matches the original almost spot on... Take your time remove as much as you can and mask off anything not being painted..
