I just rebuilt my 350 and today i ran it on the highway for the first time and i notices that the exhaust ports on the heads, the driver side were a lot darker that the ones on the passenger side.

    is this normal?

my guess is your carb is dirty, and one side is runner leaner than the other.... a lean engine will have hotter temps, also some vacuum ports on the carb tap off only one side, so if it is leaking, it will lean out one side....

If your car is equipped with a heat riser valve on the passenger side exhaust make sure it is opening properly.

If you just unhook that heat valve doesnt it "flop" open as default, instead of closed???

    NOt sure myself.

The only problem with the theory of one side of the carb being lean is that the engine has a dual plane manifold, this means that each side of the carb feeds 2 cylinders on each side of the engine.

In other words, if one side of the carb was not working properly, you would effectively have 2 cylinders on eac side of the engine not running correctly, not all 4 on one side. Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPRISES

This is just a guess but it might have something to do with your rocker shaft.....maybe it isnt completely down on there all the way and your not opening your valves very much or something, i would double check that.

Only other thing could be a restriction in the exaust for that side somewhere....which is more likely....check it out.
