when using a cadillac rear main seal is the length that has to be trimmed?and what did you trim it with?
460 Ford works without trimming I have used them quit a few times without any leaks. 460s have 2 different size rear mains, you need the larger of the 2. Jeff
When this came up before I think Jim Burek chimed in and said the 460 is not correct. Now I could be wrong but that is just what I recall.
I have one in the car on my avatar, no leaks. Used them many times. Maybe Jim was looking at the other 460 seal o No: . Jeff
I was the one that said 460, but that was for the 350 Buick. I did finally get to verify it and that is what the number of the seal crossed over to. I don't remember whether it was the early or late 460, but if one is way too big it's not going to be hard how to tell which one will fit.
Lark69 I used a bench grinder and took it a little at a time to keep it from getting too hot. I removed about 3/16" from one side of each half. I slid them in and out of the grooves until I got both halves just like I wanted them. You have to take your time when doing this. Also, make sure you get the proper side facing the front. Mike D.
I did similar, I cut around the wire, removed the rubber, and then ground the wire with a bench grinder. don't get it too hot or it might melt the rubber.
I have the Felpro BS 40012 in my car. It is for Cady motors 1980-85 368 1977-79 425 1968-76 472, 500 Used the Federal Mogul 470543 in the front. John
I think the TA seal is for a ford 300ci 6cyl. I don't know what years though. I tried the TA seal in my block but it was to short, it did not stick up above the surface of the block so it would have been loose in there. I have the trimmed caddy seal in it now. I have no idea why the TA seal did not work, unless the block had been run with a seal spinning in the groove at one time and wore the groove some. Unless TA sent me the wrong seal, but I am pretty sure it was right, I would think that the 350 seal would have been way to small. Tom
