Hi again Buick friends...:TU: Im intrested in geting more sound from the pipes behind my 350! Is there an easy way? Or do I have to pull the engine out of the car! The car runs great so I dont know if I want to?o No: Hope you out threre can give me some advice about this.
What is your current exhaust setup? Just changing mufflers (if you already have a 'free flowing system') to something with a throatier sound would help.:TU: Not sure if you want to go with the Flowmaster mufflers or not - they're generally a little on the loud side. I would go with the Dynomax Ultra-Flo muffler -- very free flowing, with a good rumble!:TU: If you ever decide to rebuild the 350, a good performance cam such as the TA 212, would really 'add' to the 'performance sound'!!:TU:
Tone?? I have the orig. cast manifolds to dual 2 1/2" pipes, Flowmaster 40 series - 2 chamber mufflers with trundowns ending before the axle. Mixed with the TA cam, at idle my car sets off car alarms. This is entertainment for my wife and I on the weekends at the mall. Sad isn't it??? DRAWBACKS!!!!!-- The drone is terriable at 2500 rem which is my highway driving rpm. I do not have a radio in the car (weight) so we wear earplugs when we go to the track. Good luck!
Nice How much did that cost you all together Jason? oh and what year engine was it? Heads ported? or will that make a difference to the sound. Also someone said if you offset your cam it will make it sound deeper also.... what does it mean to offset the cam? and what else will it do to the engine?
Offsetting the cam - would be adjusting the cam timing when degreeing the motor. Something such as 'advancing' the cam 4 degrees - gives you more 'low end'.
It all depends if you want loud, or you want deep. I am running stock 2.25 pipes and turbo mufflers all the way out to the back. It sounded like a "stock" muscle car. I put a TA Performance TA212 cam and Stage 1 intake on it, and it is now pretty loud for a "mufflered" car. I have also made it so the guys in the "old junk" will not pull up next to me and want to race anymore unless they are serious. The idle is a bit bumpy at 1000rpm. If you want loud, just put some glass packs on it. If you want a nice deep lumpy sound, go with a bigger cam and some low restriction mufflers. :TU:
Thanks for all the god tips! Mike I been to your webside and your car sound just like I wanted my 350 to sound! For me its like music!!!:TU: I love the sound!!!
Thanks! You are looking for the same thing I was, a bit of Oohmph and a nice sounding idle. I had planned on getting headers and larger exhaust, but it sounds just right now.....amazingly. This is probably the first time I have bought a cam and got exactly what I wanted....plus some! TA all the way! I set it up on desktop dyno today and I think the program is alittle off....not alot though. I set up the stock 70 GS that is 315hp and 10.25:1. It gave me about 304 hp in the software, and when I added just the cam it went to 350hp. The Stage 1 intake showed a loss of about 3hp I think...... That's where I have my doubts about the software. It only had a standard dual plane intake listed......so it may be just that. I am figuring that it gave my bone stock GS from 315hp to about 355hp. So the software is pretty close! Here is a graph for ya.
Good tone!! Everything I listed is all there is. Cast manafolds (not ported), only thing done on the heads was a valve job, and a TA Performance cam, like every one else uses. The 2 chamber 40 series mufflers really are the key to mine. Do not use glass packs. Huge waste of money and they do rob horsepower. You get what you pay for!!! Good luck!
