anyone have problems with chrome valve covers leaking. thought my 350 blew the rear seal but it now looks like the covers leaking. could i just wire wheel the chrome off the sealing area or is there a better way? thanks, brad.
That is one of the problems with chrome valve covers, oil pans, and tranny pans, they leak. You need to roughen up the gasket surface. The other problem with chrome is that it holds in heat. Not the ideal situation for an oil pan. Jim Burek
thanks for the reply. i think i will switch out the covers for the originals. cooler temps and no more oil leaks sound good to me.
I have chrome valve cover on the 350 in my 66 with no leaks. Are you sure they haven't been over tightened and bent?
im sure i didnt overtighten em, been down that road before could have been a lousy gasket, what type is better cork or rubber? just recently got all the oil cleaned up from the undercarriage. you wouldnt beleive how much the oil spreads when your doing 80 mph for 2 hours. never did notice a drop in pressure though.
Tho they take away from the stock appearance, T/A's aluminum valve covers are great for a no leak seal. I switched to them when my stockers would no longer seal. The fel-pro rubber gaskets I have re-used at least a dozen times or more Mark
IMO cork gaskets are better. They seal better, plus if there is a leak the cork will absorb the oil and swell up stopping the leak... or at least it's supposed to This is what I did to my stock covers, looks better than chrome I think-
:beer thanks guys, i repainted my originals, used rubber gaskets and so far no leaks, no drips, no long nights cleaning oil off the car.
