I recently rebuilt my little 340 with some performance goodies, but now after 500 miles the engine is starting to knock. I think it might be the lifters, because sound tends to go with the rev but is not as noticable when engine rev is raised. The cam I selected was from camcraft cams.com. The lift is .47 @.500. I would like to know if this exceeds the limits on my heads. The pushrods and lifters ofcourse were new and I have never put together a engine that this has occurred. This is the second time I have gone into the engine, but the first time I used the same pushrods and cam. I do not want to bend the pushrods. So anyone with info of the stock lift of these heads please let me know.

if you put the car in gear and give it a little gas holding the brake does the knock go away? if it does it might be a rod bearing. if it does not it could be a lifter or main bearing. how is you oil pressure ?

I got the car home to my dads garage, where we took the valve covers off. Once this was done we quickly narrowed it down to the driver side front lifter. I put the new lifter in, but upon getting ready to put the intake back on I notice it was sipping on both sides the damn gasket was the wrong one. My dad put the engine back together and I guess he did not look hard. The guy who sold us the gasket set, sold us some for this engine before. This time he screwed up. Thanks for your response!
