I have a 1967 Skylark that has a big block 400-4, the car is not a GS. I believe this engine was put in after it left the factory but if it was whoever did it made it look stock. The cars vin is 444177K119566. I know that number has a lot of information in it but I don't know how to read it. Is there a book that you can buy that de-codes the vins? Also the build sheets that are sometimes in the cars, how do you get that info? Thanks for any help. Gary Schmidt
hey gary 4 means buick 4417 means skylark 7 means 1967 k means not sure thinking it should be x or y which is where it was made (factory plant). 119566 means serial number. starts at 100001 so yours is 19566 car of the line. the cowl tag which is located in the motor compartment breaks it down more. find those numbers and we can help you out johnny
4 = Buick 4417 = Skylark 2 door hardtop 7 = 1967 model K = Kansas City Plant of manufacture. 119566 = Individual sequence number This car came from the factory with a 300 cid Buick engine.
Here is the info on the cowl tag: 04D 1591 ST 67-44417 KAN 4333 BODY TR 164-C G2 PAINT E 2EX 4FC Thanks for any help. Gary P.S. To JohnnyGS I see from your reply that you live in B.C. How far are you from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory? This question involves a Gran Sport.
hi gary i'm very far from whitehorse. i live near Vancouver BC but in the mountains 2 hours north. 04d= made month of april - d 4th week st= style 444 17 skylark KAN= kansas City plant body#= 4333 tr= trim-164-c interior color ??? G2=paint gold mist e2ex 4fc not sure what that means anybody else with some help to fill in the blanks thanks johnny
Style = 1967 model year The 2 in G2 means the top was treated differently than the body. For that year it will be black or white either vinyl or painted top. TR 164 = Light fawn vinyl interior with notchback front seating. The rest are accessory codes. From memory E = tinted glass etc. I will will do the rest if no on else steps up.
Thanks to all who have replied. To Johnny: The reason I asked about Whitehorse is in 1968 I was a college student and a friend had worked at a high paying job in Anchorage after the earthquake(1964). Five of us decided to drive up to get rich. I drove my 1965 Gran Sport another drove a 1960 Chevrolet Bel Aire. We got to Anchorage and the economy had changed, only two found jobs. I was not one that did. On the was back, 300 miles out of Whitehorse, I was asleep and the guy driving my car lost it and wrecked. and I woke up in the Bel Aire going to the hospital in Whitehorse. I know that the car was towed to Whitehorse. The insurance company totaled the car. If you knew someone in that area I think it would be worth looking for. I would not think they would crush any cars up there. Also the car would be easy to find as there would be not a lot of junkyards in the area. If you or anyone else would go looking I would like to hear about it. Gary
