Hey guys I know a guy that is looking into buying a 72 skylark and the guy keeps telling him it is a factory big block 455 car. Was there such a thing? here is the vin number he gave me. 4H37H2Z103775 Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt
A "U" or "V" is a 455 BBB in 1972 those letters designate another engine, not sure which one. HTH! Pete
PS----The "H" after the 37 is the engine code----it might have been mistook for a "K"= 350V8/190HP---it is a Skylark Custom and was built in Fremont CA---which MIGHT mean a CLEANER frame/body combo if the car has been kept in Cali. and or garaged thru its life. Pete
4 H 37 H 2 Z 103775 4 = Buick H = Skylark Custom 37 = 2dr hardtop coupe H = 350ci 2v v8, single exhaust 2 = 1972 Z = Fremont, CA 103775 = sequential production number keeps telling him it is a factory big block 455 car. Was there such a thing? most definitely, but a 455 would be a 'T', 'U' or 'V'. if the engine has never been decked the sequential production # will be part of the EIN stamped on the face of the block deck. http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/engine_ident_where.html it's also possible the seller is trying to pass off a small block car as a big block ( as BB cars are far more valuable ). count the number of bolts holding on the valve covers. 5 bolt valve covers = Big block Buick ( 400, 430 or 455 ) 6 bolt valve covers = 350 Small block Buick ( other Buick small block Buicks have 4 bolt valve covers ) this car could still be a good deal but you need to make the seller aware that this is probably a clone. he may not actually know what he's got.
One other point I'm surprised nobody mentioned, the big block was not available in the Skylark, just the GS.
