    Hi there!
    I need some information, I have looked a lot in the web, but it doesnt match.
    I explain:
    I consider buying a 1968 Plymouth Valiant Signet (I know, I know, it is a mopar, but I have my Skylark, and another american car would be fantastic. I live in Spain, it is no easy).
    So, I want to decode the VIN.
    For the car, it should be a 13 digit VIN, but mine has more digits. And no one is a letter.
    VH21 21 5 23 215 005591
    I can think the car was not manufactured in the US.
    SO, any help, please???
    Thnaks a lot!!

    first off, that's not the VIN tag but the Body Number Plate. the VIN should be a plate on the LF door hinge pillar.

    here's what i see:
    Code:
           a b c d e f g h j k l m n p q r t u w x

                                       6               17

    A B C D E F G H J K L M N P Q R T V W X Y Z

              9         1                      1 1        2

    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8     A X     TRM     PNT    UBS

    4       3      8        4        H1B     QQ1    U

    V H 2 1     21     5   23      215     005591

    here's how my book decodes it.

    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 A X TRM PNT UBS
    4 3 8 4 H1B QQ1 U
    4 3 8 = unknown
    4 = axle code, unknown
    H1B = Frost Blue, cloth or vinyl unknown
    QQ1 = monochrome car, Electric Blue Metallic
    U = Frost Blue Metallic, upper door frame and/or accent stripe

    V H 2 1 21 5 23 215 005591
    V H 2 1 = 2dr Signet
    21 = 225ci 6 cyl
    5 = ?
    23 = i believe this should be shown with the "5" as 523 and codes the tire size and type but my book doesn't say what these numbers mean
    215 = February 15th
    005591 = production sequence

    the VIN should look something like this:
    V H 21 B 8 ? 100001
    V = Valiant car line
    H = Signet series
    21 = 2dr Sedan
    B = 225ci
    8 = 1968
    ? = assembly plant code
    100001 = production number, yours will be higher than this

    Hi, I have learned that, in 1968, Chrysler was in the process of standardizing their VIN and body tag information. They were still using part of the old system. That is why the VIN does not match the body tag. The last group of numbers on the bottom line of the body tag is called the sequence order number or S.O. number. It matches the build sheet information because when the build info was entered into the build schedule for cars in a plant it was given the next number in line. Cars were then assigned a position in production based on parts availability and body color. Body production past the paint section on any one assembly line only had one color of cars on it. When cars reached the point where the dash joined the car they were then issued a VIN. Thats why the two numbers do not match. You can however determine if you have the corect body tag for your car. The body had the S.O. number stamped into it in five locations as the body was fabricated. The easiest S.O. number to find is on the radiator saddle either on the top edge, usually under the anti-freeze decal, or on the vertical panel just below it. The numbers can be hard to see as paint tends to fill up the stampings. If the stamped number and the body tag number match usually that confirmes the ID of the car, as the VIN tag is roset riveted onto the dash shell housing and is difficult to change, it is not usually tampered with plus those damned rivets are hard to find and expensive. Chrysler used this messy system on 1968 cars only and in 1969 the S.O. number was dropped and cars were assigned VIN's when they were entered into the production scheduling system. It was a mess but that's it. Find the stamped number and you confirm the car trim info. Good Luck!
