Ok here's my question for the day. I have fairly orignal 1971 GS from AZ. that I'm painting. It has or had a vinyl top that I had to rip it off to fix a dent in the roof. The trim of course goes around the edge of the top and I also had the additonal molding on the doors. (Which never lined up right!) I prefer the looks of GS without the top. So all the molding has to go around where the top was, but what about the molding on the doors? Was that something that was only included if you had a vinyl top?

    Thanks,

    Jim

Hi Jim, if you are talking about the thin strip that ran along the top edge of the doors about an inch out from the glass and had a matching piece on each quarter just under the quarter glass, it was separate option and I have seen it on many hardtops. There are pics out there somewhere...

    Hope that helps

The only moldings that needs to be eliminated are the pieces on the upper rr qtrs and above the trunk deck. In other words only the pieces that touch the vinyl. There are the 2 side pieces 2-corner pieces and 1 long piece above the trunk. They should all have black stripes on them.

By the way if you want to eliminate all the pieces that are on the doors. The pieces below the qtr windows and on the lower trunk were all part of that rare optional package. Don't throw it out! What kind of shape are they in?

Thanks for the info guys! I would have never guessed it was option. I was always planning on keeping the original pieces in case anyone ever want to put a top back on it for orginality. Me I just thought the vinyl top didn't look that hot for a muscle car.

Check out my website, there is some 71 info you might find interesting on the Stage 1 page. Vinyl tops were classy at that time and with Buick of course they were a very hot item. Believe it or not.

That trim on the doors and quarters doesn't look bad when all polished up on a shiny new paint job. Completes the "outline" of the side glass...
