I am currently in the gruelingly slow process (especially when you only have time to work on it between work and circle track racing on the weekend) of getting my GS ready to paint. I know i need to replace the top but i was wondering if there is anything special i should know about getting it off, and also how much they are to have installed? Is intallation hard? I just assumed getting it stretched right would take special tools and talent.

You might want to consider not replacing the vinyl top.

There was a factory option to paint the top white or black and use the vinyl top trim pieces to separate the paint.

Changed mine from vinyl to two-tone paint and am very pleased with it.

Yeah like YellowLark says, keeping the vinly top off might be better unless you like and want a new vinyl top put on your car. If you are in the process of taking the vinyl top off right now and if you want to take it off yourself, use acetone to take it off. Acetone loosens the glue that holds the vinyl top on and it comes off really easy. Oh, and make sure to take off the window chrome trim off of both windshields so you can get all of the vinyl off.

well that makes alot of sense. there is not top on my car. but because it has the trim seperating the colors and i have seen other cars with vinyl i assumed somebody removed it. :Dou:

I'm pretty sure I want to keep the vynil, i like it for one, also the roof is kinda rough, and the vynil will hide that a little better

Here in Ohio got estimates of $450 to $550 to install including material,
assuming you put the v moldings back on. They weren't sure how to do
it and I could probably do that part better anyway.
But I think I would have a professional shop do the vinyl installation.
They do it all the time and I know they would do better than me.
Costs on west coast might be more but I found plenty of shops
by looking in the yellow pages. Like you, still debating if I should do it
on my 67. Leaning that way though. Don't normally like vinyl tops but
have seen them on these 66s and 67s and think they look good especially
in a contrasting color that matches the interior. Good luck.
