Just something I was wondering, what type of finish (paint) is under the vinyl top? If you were going to base coat / clear the car, would you only put the base coat on under the vinyl or would you add the clear then sand it to roughen it up a bit? What is the process? Thanks

the original finish is probably primer. my guess about finishing now would be just an application of epoxy primer then apply the roof.

Factory cars just have overspray typically on the roof.

For a car your painting now, I strongly suggest that surface prepare and paint the roof, just as if it was going to show.. we have rust problems with cars with vinyl tops, mainly because the surface underneath is open to corrosion, as done at the factory.

Yes, you can skip the final sanding of the areas that the top will cover, but you do need to seal it up, and that's what the clear does.

Yes, this is exactly what I did.....roof was preped and painted with the base coat and clear. Then a scuffing for the glue to adhear to the roof.

wouldn't just using an epoxy primer on the roof be adequate?

Our upholstery shop screams when we mention painting the top...bad adhesion. Epoxy primer is great.

Doesn't the epoxy become porous after a while?

It shouldn't. Most modern 2k urethane primers are catalyzed with an activator(hardener)
I would still paint it though, if not in base/clear, at least a single stage paint.

if do paint the whole roof with the body colour, then u will have to wait a couple of months for the paint gasses to be released before u can install the vinyl roof.

That's a good point Jerry....I waited close to 14 weeks before the vinyl top was installed. 4 years and she still looks like the day it was installed :TU:
