thats one dog of a motor,my buddy bought one of "the last monte carlos" in 84/85?it sucked,it was a fluke from GM,walk away, transplant before you waste more time:TU:
It has the crappy 305. I cost him $7000 to have a builder go top to bottom just to get a little over 300hp. jeezus. has no one heard of GMPP? i mean, sheeesh, you can get a brand new and warranteed 602 crate 350ci rated at 350hp for under 4 grand. put fuel and water pumps, carb and headers on and you're good to go. http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/Parts/part_detail.jsp?cat=ENG&sku=88958602 if you're going to go SBC, do it right. a good engine man can build you a better 350 SBC for ~$5 grand but you need to make sure you've got somebody who knows what they're doing.
Bob - I agree. The problem is it is a Pace Car and he wanted to keep it numbers matching. He took the engine to a very good race engine build in the area and asked them to get as much HP as the Crossfire could give.
Unless he is going to do points type shows why not just pull the #'s motor and store it. Then put in a nice crate motor. Tell him if he tries to work over the motor he has he may blow it up and lose the motor. A nice 383 would walk all over any version of the 305 without breaking a sweat. If money is not a problem this is the only way to go.
So this thing is already a max effort by the shop based on the customer's request for more power on a budget? I don't know of anything else to add if they know what they're doing. Devon
Unless he is going to do points type shows why not just pull the #'s motor and store it. Then put in a nice crate motor. this. if numbers matching is such a huge deal to him he needs to store the engine, not be screwing around racing it. but then, he already sounds pretty loony doesn't he?
