I want 3rd gear sooner than 40 mph at light throttle. I tried adjusting the vacuum modulator to no avail. Would a governor spring adjustment do the trick? I always thought the governor controlled full throttle shifts
If you're not getting response from the modulator screw adjustment, check the vacuum hose connections at the modulator and intake manifold. A minor leak makes the modulator think the throttle is open further, thus later shifts. Devon
What transmission? Make sure the downshift detent isn't accidentally engaged. On a 350 turbo it's a cable and could get bound up or stuck. On a 400 turbo, the solenoid could be loose in the pan.
What about that cable on the gas pedal to trans is it set right disconnect from gas pedal and see if it shifts. It should be real quick to 3rd. You don't know how nice it is to be on the highway at 73mph and only turning 23-2400 rpm push it to 80 and going 2500 maybe. check the vac line to trans for leak too.
Turbo 350 It’s had a late shift to third since it was rebuilt and I lost my original big can modulator. Janis put a small one with the red stripe on it, and I’m sure he knows what he’s doing Even backing off the throttle while at light cruise to increase vacuum it still doesn’t shift to third, not until 40/41 mph will it up shift to third, which tells me it’s not the modulator, but the governor, since it seems speed related, not vacuum related.
Finally got a solid answer in my garage from the B&M instructions (after I found the box) To bring the shifts close together (which is what I want) install the stiffer springs, to spread them out, use lighter springs. I was reading so many different opinions and watching useless videos I was getting frustrated. I thought “I’ll read the instructions” The videos were the worst “I got a uh turbo uhhh 350, and I’m uhhhhhh gonna show you mmmmm how uhhhhhhh to chang the uhhhhh shift points”
I started to do this yesterday after work, then realized the trans crossmember has to be moved back, so I did the governor this morning while it was cool out (7:30 am) Pulled it out, and replaced one spring with a slightly heavier one, I measured coil diameter to make sure this different spring was indeed stiffer, old spring was .19 new spring was .24 Ok fingers crossed I got it right cause it’s a pain in the ass doing this. BINGO! First to second is 10 mph, second to third is 18/20 mph at light throttle. I couldn’t stand that hanging in second till 40 mph
Weekend after next, the 26th I’m also going to Kuhlne (Thompson) Sept 3rd, for TNT, hopefully the Buick event will be there
Lol yeah I know! I got tired of watching vids from people that think they know what their talking about
