Duane you know if you find a nice 71 PA plate you can use that instead of the Purple tag or the new Antique tag. There is a guy on craigslist selling them.

I have the new style plate on my 71 GSX and would prefer one of the old purple ones. I like the look much better, especially on a Stratomist Blue car, and now that you can re-tag your car with the old plates...........thats the way I want to go.

    Want to swap?

    Engie,
I thought the last "year embossed" PA plates were "69". I think we still have a bunch of them in my dad's garage.

Duane, I went to my notary to ask about them because I have the original plate from my 87 GN and he said I can use it. I am going to do that next year, so if you have one that is from your year you can use it.

I don't think it would be a good plate for your GS tho.

This is great! I did not know about this until read this thread. Forget the purple plates!
I always liked the older Pa plates that had the shape of the state. I like the 65-70 plates the best. The 58-64 are good too, but they have the "58" with the sticker. This is great news. PA DMV gets something right!
Now to find the plate with the number/letter combo that has a meaning to me.....

Looks like I cannot use one of the PA purple antique plates, but could use one of the PA Liberty Bell plates. (71-76 vintage)

Anyone have one of those laying around?

Anyone know if a vintage 'Dealer' plate can be used on an antique/classic vehicle?

Before you buy a vintage plate, make sure the number is presently not in use. Check here to see if it's available:
    https://www.dot33.state.pa.us/vehicle_services/vrvanity.jsp#top?20120819113012688=20120819113012688

Another site with good info on plates and year of use:
    http://www.ricksplates.com/pennsylvania/papass2.htm
For example, a correct 1971 issue plate would have the following:
1971 no sticker Natural serials: all numeric; letter in position 1; letter in position 6; letter in position 2 approx. to early alphabet.

    Walt,
Probably not. In PA. Dealer plates carry their own insurance, and are very expensive. By that I mean the car dealer is insured no matter what car he puts it on. I could not imagine Penn Dot re-validating one of those unless it was for big money.

The search is over. I called my friend Rich and he had a single Liberty bell plate and it was for a 71. Hopefully I can get it on the GSX soon.

All you PA. guys. Check out licenseplates.tv You can order plates with or without bell and what you want on it. A little pricey but worth it. Tom

    Tom,
I don't think you quite get whats going on here.

I was hoping I could replace the current "antique" tag with one of the old purple "antique" tags but that was not the case. They are not transferrable except under very specific situations.

PA just passed a law where you can use period, as in "with the same corresponding year of manufacture" correct license plates for your antique or classic vehicle, instead of the regular antique or classic tags.

The only catch is you have to use the correct year plate. In my case I want to put this on a 71 GSX, so I need an original "vintage" 71 plate for the car, or I cannot use it. The 71 plates were the first year for the liberty bell, so I am stuck with that design.

Personally I would prefer the earlier plates with the state outlined on them, but the last year they were used was 1970. However you can bet your a** one of those plates will make it on my 70 442 when it's done.

Duane, if you go the web site and look under Penna. you can by a 71 plate with whatever you want on it. Here in Ohio we have been allowed to run year of manufacturer plates and a lot of guys buy these and register them to the car after they have purchased ohio historical plates. Tom
