OK heres the deal, I live in south central Ohio and we want to take a trip to the left coast this fall. I want to take kind of a southern route on the way out, maybe follow old route 66 some, and end up at Big Bear CA. where my wife has some relation. On the way home I would like to go more north, like through Denver and the Dakotas. I want to take off work the first two weeks of Oct. for this trip. Could some of you guys that live in Colorado and other places in and around the Rockies give me a guess if this may be too late in the year to get me caught in snow or not? I have had some people tell me to go earlier and some say don't worry about it. I would just like to hear from someone whos lives out that way for a true story. Thanks for your help, Mike

I live in Denver and significant snow would be uncommon in early October, at least to make travel difficult. If you're coming west on I-70 the very worst that might happen is getting stuck in a mountain town for a night or so until they cleared the highway.

If was me taking the trip I wouldn't worry about it at all. Of course you'll see on the news if a big storm is coming and might alter/delay your plans accordingly.

If at all possible try to make at least part of your drive north over CA 1 (The Coast Highway)/101 from San Francisco north. It's absolutely spectacular. And if you have a lot of time, Glacier Nat'l Park in NW Montana is well worth the trip, especially in Autumn. There's lots to see out here and those are two places I wouldn't miss.. the two most beautiful cruises I've ever taken. You can check the weather as you go.

Then it would be I-90 eastward and maybe catch I-80.
