I have a 71 Riviera and i have read that people say to change to 3.73 gears for better performance (and prob worse mileage, but mileage doesnt matter to me). Where do you get them? Hard to install? I dont need posi for this right?

I do not think you will find any gear sets are reproduced for your car. These are 9 3/8" post 70 BOP gears. You do not want that gear ratio anyway. I do not think they ever made this ratio for this application. The highest numerical ratio I see for post 70 Buicks with a 455 engine is 3.42 and even those are chicken lips.

It is kind of an academic discussion. With a stock engine you have so much torque that you can accelerate well given its a heavy car. The stock gears were 2.93 I think. The 71 GS Riv has 3.42 gear sets. But they are hard to find, even used.

Do something cheap frst like have your distributor recurved and set the total timing up to 32-34 degrees.

3.08'S are nice. 3.73's in my opinion are too steep without an overdrive trans. unless you like revving the engine like crazy at highway speeds.
