I don't think this one's been covered before....

I started driving at about 14/15 years old on an older cousins Chevy Biscayne. I graduated from that to his 70 Nova with a slant six and three on the tree. That car was a pumpkin orange dealer lot end of year left over- ugly. There was also a '71-'72 Chevy full sized wagon in there- now that was a boat!

For my "official" driving lessons in HS, I got the pleasure of driving a brand spankin' new Ford Fairmont- a POS right off the dealer lot!

So let's hear it. What did you learn to drive in?

    First Car!

I learned to drive in my grandmother's 49 Pontiac with a flat head 239" 6cyl. and a "4-speed hydro". I was about 6 years old when she started letting me drive from the front gate to the farm back about a 1/4 mile to the house. Maybe that's why I still "love those 1/4 mile drives". That was also the first car I ever raced at a real dragstrip. Aug. of 64 I ran it in G/G. Had it stripped out for weight reduction and a split manifold and big carb. I been going down hill ever since.

GSJohn BUICK is a beauty too!!

I actually started driving my dad's Farmall M tractor, then moved on to the International 656 wide front, THAT ONE had power steering!!! The first car/truck I started driving was a 1967 International pickup, man could that thing fly!! While all my classmates were trying to find a "compact" car to learn to drive and take their drivers test in, I had the wonderful task of taking my drivers test in a 1974 BUICK ELECTRA LIMITED! WOW, was that car nice, tan leather, maroon with a maroon vinyl top, Buick rally wheels, fender skirts, I wish I had a photo of that car! That was the nicest car my parents ever owned. By the way, I didn't make a single mistake on the drivers test!! YIPPPEEE!!!! :beer

    learn to drive

Bruce you are giving away your age man. I learned to drive in 61 Chevy Biscayne 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree at 16. Then at 17 dad bought me a 61 Biscayne 6 cylinder slushbox (powerglide) for $50.00 for high school. Man that car was slow but no one could beat me in a drag race on snow or ice as it would not spin the tires once I installed the studded snow tires. Remember them? Both cars were manual steering, remember how you could snap the steering wheel left or right at about 20-30 MPH and the car would just rock back and forth scraping the door handles on each side and squealing the tires but still go straight down the road all by itself? Something about the steering and suspension geometry. A cop caught me doing that once and asked "what the _ _ _ _ are you doing" but let me go with a warning. No cares or worries then man.

I'm young and my "learn to drive" cars were boring.

My mom had an '88 Cutlass Ciera that I drove until I got my '85 Buick and a '90 Accord.

Shortly after that came the '70 Skylark. The Skylark is what I learned how to drive a rear wheel drive car in. I still couldn't figure out why my mom didn't get a Turbo Regal when she got the Cutlass Ciera.

as a farm boy, i first learned to drive on a 1951 ford 8n (my dad's first new tractor) when i was 6 years old. my dad kept that tractor like new until 1990 when he retired from farming. an old family friend eventually purchased the tractor and it now resides in alberta. at 7 years old, i learned to drive his 1947 green ford one ton pickup. 4 on the floor. the first car i drove was his new 1963 chev impala 2dr ht, when i was 15.

1982 Olds 98 Regency. Somehow the Olds/Caddy dealer won the contract with the department of education. Prior to that year Plymouth Volare's were the car of choice..... :3gears:

This should be a fun thread! I learned to drive in my 69 Riviera GS. I had that car before I ever got my license. I did have a few parking lot lessons in my step father's chocolate brown 79 Cadillac Sedan De Ville. I used the Caddy to take my road test in as well. I was going to use the Riv for the road test, but everyone told me that it would'nt be a good idea to go there with a "hot rod".

Borrowed 1949 Ford Bussiness Coupe (with standard shift !), at a local Supertest Service Station - twice around the block with hand signals, parallel park and that was it ! All at the tender age of 17, cause you had to have both parents signature on the application if you were 16, and my Mom wouldn't sign the application. :af:
I had Uncles who used to let me steer their cars and shift gears at age 12! :Do No:

started driving an old farmall tractor my grandpa had. moved up to his green 63 ford flatbed truck. i think it was a f-300? i was about 10 then. from there i got to drive his 62 falcon ranchero. 3 on the tree 200 inline six. reverse and second was at about 1 o'clock. first and third was at about 4. linkage was so wore out you had to jiggle and work the shifter in to second gear. it was good training for my first vehicle. a 65 chevy stepside shortbed truck 235/w three on the column. later to be 350/350 buick. it had a 5.13 rear gear in it and that torquey little 350 would snap your neck to 60 mph. top end was only about 90(i guess as the speedo never worked) but good god would it get there fast! that thing was probably my first real hot rod. cobbled together from about anything i coud find. it had a ford radiator, buick engine/transmission, seats out of an old chrysler of some kind(newport i think) floor shifter made out of a lengthened b&m 3 speed floor shifter cobbled together the linkage with some threaded 5/16 rod. old grant g.t. steering wheel i got out of the junkyard. it had no power steering. beer keg in the bed behind the cab was the gas tank. had it on a pedestal with some metal straps banding it to the pedestal. sight tube on the side to check the fuel level (originals fill neck leaked and made you keep a head ache). daddy had a friend of his to paint it for my 16th birthday. only colors he had was red and dark blue. mixed it and came up with a maroon -burgundy-kinda purple color. looked surprisingly good with the chrome bullet hole rims all the way around. it had three inch exhaust with four inch chrome tips turned out in front of the rear tires. you could imagine the look on the face of the lady that gave me my license exam when she saw it.
