Hi there... I'm still a newbie to all this, and I'm trying to determine if the Carter carb that I have originally came with the car, or if it might be aftermarket... I really don't know much about the history of my car (66 skylark w/300), so I'd like to know if it's original or not... Here are some pics. Can anyone help? Thanks! :TU:
Looks right but... Ethan, Post the #'s stamped on the front mounting flange and we'll be able to tell you what it's original application was. :TU:
Ethan, Looks like an old Carter AFB to me. Alot of 66 Buick motors used the Carter carbs. I'd say it is probably original. My GS facts and figures book only lists the carbs used on the 340 and larger engines, most are Carter AFB's for 1966. Any numbers visible on the carb?
Here are the only numbers I could find... 3 6-1743 The number 3 is above the other numbers, and the 1743 is inside a little oval. It does say Carter AFB... I really need to find my service manual, I think I lost it when I moved! D'oh
Ethan, Facing the front, look below the feul inlet and next to the choke housing. On the front mounting fange (where it's bolted to the manifold) is some stamped numbers and/or letters. I can see part of it in your photo but it's kinda obscured by the feul line. Those will tell the original application of that carb. :Smarty:
duh Aaah I see. Ok, I found the numbers: 3826S L4 And, as a bonus, I managed to find my service manual! *whew* I thought I'd have to try to find another one. According to my manual, it looks like in '66 they only used Rochesters on the 300s. My best guess is that it was off of a 340 or a '65 300? I can't find the above code in my manual. It looks like 4 barrels weren't even an option on the 300?? Any one know for sure where my carb came from? I guess it doesn't really matter that much, but it would be nice to know a little bit more about my car than I do now!!:TU:
Hmm, that makes me wonder if the entire engine is from a '65... that might make sense. I'll have to look into that. Too late now, need some sleep!
