What does this wear pattern mean? It doesn't look familar.

These gears have about 9,000 miles on them, and make no noise. I'm changing the gear oil over to a synthetic, that's why the cover is off. No apparent metal in the fluid, but I didn't run a magnet through it.

GM 8.5", richmond 3.70 gears (that's all I know about them, got them free)

Playing with the contrast, color tint, etc. of the picture, it looks like the original pattern is still there. It's kind of visible at the top of the first picture. I think the flash kind of white washed it and over accented some of the details. Still not what I expected to see when I popped the cover, but I haven't seen too many rear gears up close.

Looks to be a swipe. Well done. I would avove using synthetic with the clutch cone type friction based posi unit. A torsen posi can handle synthetic just fine as it does NOT use clutches or cones. It uses gear to gear transitions.

Laod it with a mineral base oil and use 6-8 oz. of limited slip differential fluid additive.

Thanks, it's the first rear axle I've set up. Too late on the Synthetic, but if I'm unhappy with it I can drain it (T/A cover, has a drain plug). The cover was actually off for the change because the gasket was seeping, I went to a black RTV with a new gasket.
