Hi all the car is almost ready to be put back together all I need now is bearings and gaskets to finish the Stage 1. I have two sets of gears I can put in the Chevelle I just wanted to know what would be the best to use. I'd like some fuel efficiency  even with a big block but I don't want the thing to be weak off the line. I have a set of 3:42 posi's & a set of 2:96's kicking around what would you guys use. I am leaning towards using the 3:42 the car will mostly be a cruiser but every now and than I'd like to tear up the track and smoke anyone who doesn't respect the Big Block Buick transplant:Brow: or should I step up to a 3:73 gear. Thanks for any advice.

I think the 3.42's are a great street/strip combo. If your crusing speeds have a little more rpm than you like, just put on some 28" tall tires and knock it down a bit.

the 342s are the way to go , i have them in my gs with a 28" tire it cruises great and it still moves very well at the track . mike

I have 3.73 and am getting rid of them. You will be buzzing down the highway at almost 3300 rpm's at 70 mph. Stick with the 3.42's or 3.55's.

I like my 3.42s. Good compromise.

    Hi there,

Just thought I'd say hi to another Buick guy on the rock.....not many around anywhere never mind here in Nfld. I use the 3:73's in my '70 St 1 and find it ok on the highway @ 3000 or so but most of the driving is ariound the city. Drop me a line at fmcgrath@nf.sympatico.ca if you like.
