My body man says there is supposed to be some rubber flaps here. There are some small holes from the factory. They would be above the tailpipes to keep the dirt off the back of of the bumper. ALos abouve the gas filler neck is a spot he claims there is supposed to be a bracket to the gas tank neck ?????????? I have parts many Buicks and have never seen these on any car. I know the 70 had a 2" rubber flat piece but these are supposed to be flaps:Do No: :Do No: :Do No: :Do No: :Do No: :Do No:

Nothing shows in the assembly manual but the rubber blocks.
Like you, I've never seen any kind of "flaps". Must be a Chevy thing. :puzzled:

Your bodyman is not familiar with Buicks, nothing goes where he claims.

No flaps, no filler neck bracket.

While I agree as I have torn down quite a few there are holes for these flaps and bracket in the pan. Is it possible that the pan is the same for other cars? The small hole above the gas neck would be perfect for a smal bracket. Does anyone know if Olds or Pont used them this guy is a big Pontiac freak and has restored many Olds A bodies

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

Holes may be alignment holes for the jig so the frame could be welded....I have restored 70-2 Cutlass and Skylark models and nothing has ever been there.

The 1970 Skylark Convertible I have that was built in Fremont has a @2" wide strip or very dried out rubber that attaches through the pinch weld below the trunk opening. It is stapled in in the same fashion as the rubber guards on the inner fenders. It was also missing rubber blocks that space the rear bumper away from the body. There was evidence of a rubber block being on the rh side at some point but is was missing when I removed the bumper.

I have the reminants of the rubber strip to use as a pattern if needed.

This is the first car I've seen that has the strip. I've never owned on with it before and never seen one on a slavage yard with it attached either.

The hole above the filler neck is indeed for a bracket. I have no idea if Buick used such a bracket, but I guarantee that Olds did -- at least in 1970 they did (I haven't researched other years). It is extremely common for the bracket to have gone missing after all these years.

Shown below is the clamp that Olds used on the filler neck. Not shown is the L-shaped bracket with a concave leg which got strapped to the filler neck using the clamp. The verticle part of the bracket then had a single hole and screw (if I remember correctly) which attached to the body. Maybe this picture will jog you Buick owner's memories; or maybe Buick never used such a clamp/bracket.

My 1970 GS convertible also have the staples.(built in Flint)
Shouldn't there something like a cardboard filling the gap? Maybe I'm wrong but I think someone here on the board was selling a reproduction of the piece and the staples too...
Unfortunately can't remember who it was.

Here is a picture taken from a '70 GS that I am restoring for another board member....these flaps were factory for sure. They were held in with staples similar to the staples used on the inner fender rubber shields.

71-72 Olds did not use anything. 71 Buick did not either.

    Neither did '72.
John, didn't you replace the rear clip? Was the donor car a '70?

    Hello eganddg,

Can you tell me if the staples go from top down or the other way around on the rubber trim piece.

    Thanks

The staples went from the top downward on my parts car. As for installing them I would spend some time find the correct size staples and then manuall install with a small tap hammer, a body dolly, etc.

Thanks for the info. As for the staples, i plan on using stainless steel wire to make my own staples and then insert them manually.

    Thanks again...

I had 2 1970 Olds W-30's and never noticed that strap but then again I never looked either.

Seems like the trend is that the convertibles have straps and the hardtops don't. Maybe it's based on the particular package or maybe it's just the same as every other GM ever built. Sometimes the guy working the line remembers to put it in and sometimes he doesn't.

One thing I've learned dealing with GM cars is never say that something should or shouldn't be part of the car if it's period correct and a GM part. I've seen so many parts that aren't for a certain car but sure as heck came that way from the factory. I've even seen sensors and wiring installed in Chevys for options that were only available in the Buicks :Do No:

    Guys,

Yes, there is the rubber strip that staples to the pinch weld behind the trunk, John mentions that in his first post. We sourced material for reproducton of that strip here several years ago. Staples are the same ones that hold the inner fender flaps on.

His body guy says there are suppose to be some flaps apparently in addition to this, which there are not.

And I have never seen any type of filler neck bracket or strap on any 70-72 A body Buick. Hardtop or convert.
