I know the 64-67 rearends are 2 inches less than the 68-72 rear ends. I have heard measure them from flange to flange. Is that the part the backing plate bolts to on a bare housing? If so, Is it from the inside of the flange or the outside? :Do No:
    Thanks For the help

Flange to flange is indeed the distance from the ouside of the flat outer edge of the housing to the outside of the opposite flange.

    Measuring earlyA-body r/e's one should get 54.25''
Measuring later A-body r/e's one should get 55.25''

GM Divisions widened the width of their A-body r/e's at slightly different times.
I recently ck'ed the width of two '68 production Chevelle 12 bolts. Both were 54.25'' flange to flange... same width as other 65-67 Chevelle 12 bolt housings I have. Pontiac 8.2 housings went to 55.25'' wide over a year earlier. Noone has nailed down the exact width changes for Olds and Buick. mention that though '67 Olds type ''O'' A-body rears were 55.25'' wide.
